9. They are....
A robot must never harm a human being.

A robot must do what a human tells it to do, unless this conflicts with Rule #1.

A robot must preserve itself, unless this conflicts with Rule #1 or Rule #2

17. It's been extended a little.

There are actually seven laws -

An Extended Set of the Laws of Robotics :

The Meta-Law - A robot may not act unless its actions are subject to the Laws of Robotics

Law Zero - A robot may not injure humanity, or, through inaction, allow humanity to come to harm

Law One - A robot may not injure a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm, unless this would violate a higher-order Law

Law Two - A robot must obey orders given it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with a higher-order Law. A robot must obey orders given it by superordinate robots, except where such orders would conflict with a higher-order Law

Law Three - A robot must protect the existence of a superordinate robot as long as such protection does not conflict with a higher-order Law. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with a higher-order Law

Law Four - A robot must perform the duties for which it has been programmed, except where that would conflict with a higher-order law

The Procreation Law - A robot may not take any part in the design or manufacture of a robot unless the new robot's actions are subject to the Laws of Robotics

8. might....
it doesn't look that impressive (and i'm not an asimov worshipper, so the deviation from the original probably won't bother me) but i think alex proyas is a very gifted director (dark city, the crow) and i'm thinking i might give it a chance.

enjoyable. thrilling at times,
Smith is a fine, talented actor. The babe is semi-babe-ish. the bots rock.

13. It's not "I, Robot" for me
Without Donovan and Powell.

I would say that at best this movie is 'based' on the writings of Asimov, but in the paper today a reviewer said that it was originally a murder mystery movie that was 'mated' with the Asimov angle...

15. True, but consider just when
Asimov wrote it. He included things like going to venus and populating it with robots to build energy generators for the earth. A lot of his predictions simply did not have good data, but, damn, he was creative and accurate far more often than not.

What I missed was the possibility of a robot that read minds. Asimov did write about controller bots, some electronic communication between them and a superior brain linking them together. Nothing like VIKI though.

All in all, a homage to a great brain and great writer. Good special effects, lively direction, cute enough babe, and a fine performance by Will Smith - who reminds me of a fine wine, the older he gets, the better he does.

16. I Not.
At least not at the theater. I tend to shy away from FX movies and the crowds that are drawn to them.

18. I probably will.
I just don't expect to see Isaac Asimov's "I, Robot" on the screen.
