Evil clown phobias....?
Anyone here have childhood clown phobias?

Thanks partly to the awesome reach of DU we are getting a lot of visitors at the new satire site. But some people leave after they see the clown painting on the entry page and don't go into the magazine itself.(Stats tell me this.) I also got some post replies and emails about the "evil clown"....some people seem genuinely freaked out. It isn't even supposed to be evil ..it's just a goofy parody of socialist realist posters. (It is a painting, acrylic on masonite, by artist and longtime anti-war activist Pat Davis.)

Geez, it's not like we put up something really scary like a picture of Peggy Noonan or something.

Also, events catch up with jokes...the fake Bush press conference/dirty little song about keeping Cheney on the ticket (in The Blat section of the mag) was written and recorded almost 2 years ago....suddenly topical again. Personally, I hope Cheney the Hut stays on the ticket, but only Rove knows for sure.

8. No clowns, period.
Evil, funny, sad, goofy or otherwise. ALL clowns are scary. I have never liked them. I saw a news story a few years ago about a wedding at a clown "college" and I almost had a panic attack. So damn creepy...

9. I have an advice for you:
Never read Stephen King's book entitled: IT. There's one hell of an evil clown in it!

How about mimes? How do you feel about them?
While I don't have any such phobias, the creepiest thing I have ever seen would have to be some street performer in Palma de Mallorca trying to look like a cadaverically pale rendition of Mother Theresa. The street performer achieved the effect very well (I think it might have actually been a very small man --and just as ugly as she was) and had all the grace of some slow motion animatronic monstruosity. It was creepy as hell. I wanted to be nowhere near that.

10. One of my friends has a clown phobia
He's 40, and has always had a clown phobia. His parents took him to the circus museum in Baraboo Wisconsin when he was four or five, and he got the crap scared out of him by.......(I don't know, that's as far as he ever got in the story when he told me because he just about passed out remembering.) Being the GREAT friend I am, I got him the adult pop-up book of phobias, just because it had a section on clown phobias. There is a page where an evil looking clown pops up out of the book at you! He just about had a heart attack when he saw that. (Yes, we really are good friends!)By the way, this condition is called coulrophobia (fear of clowns).

18. Yep, that's the one I bought
It covers fear of dentists, fear of heights, fear of public toilets and about 5 other phobias. This is the best gift book I have ever bought anyone! The pop-ups are just great...very detailed and unusual. My favorite is the pop-up toilet with the lid and seat that lift up!

There are numerous people that reject clowns (I am one)

Don't ask me to explain why I detest clowns...just find them to be vile.

16. Just the mention..
I forgot about a friend of mine....10,12 years ago I was at the piano at her house working with her husband on some commercial jingle or something...I used to do that ....and she mentioned that she hated clowns. Of course, I started making up a very evil clown opera on the spot..."Just Clowning Around, JUST CLOWNING AROUND........"

She ran from the room screaming (and laughing - she isn't insane).

OK, I'll soft pedal the clown next issue, around Aug 7 or 15 or something.

23. AHHHHHH!!!!!!
I didn't have a clown phobia until I read that book. They've freaked me out ever since. Same with balloons, especially those I see floating around having escaped from whoever once owned them.

I was driving home from work one night, about 11:30pm, and as I crossed the bridge over the highway, I suddenly realized the McDonald's they'd been building on the other side had opened. Well, I realized that after having my panic attack when I saw this gigantic clown holding balloons lit from underneath by some sort of spotlight.

It didn't help that I'd just read King's book Dreamcatcher. During one scene in the book, one of the characters ends up around Derry looking for some watershed type thing. He saw something scribbled in some surface that said "Pennywise Lives."

Geezus. I just got chills writing that.

24. My significant other
Hates clowns. Absolutely loathes them. I don't think it is fear, but there's something about clowns which are disturbing to some people.
