Dragonflies eat mosquitos, and are very good to have around!

10. I grew up on a lake in northern Minnesota
If you've ever been up there, you'd agree that its the worst place for mosquitos in the entire country. But thankfully every summer in the span of a week thousands of dragonfly nymphs would crawl out of the murky lake and onto our lawn to molt, and then fly off and decimate the choking swarms of mosquitos which thereafter became much more tolerable. We'd even intentionally leave a large patch of unmowed grass on our lawn because they liked to crawl up long grass to do their molting. The dragonflies also liked to catch and eat those huge biting horseflies we had up there too, which was an added benefit.

5. No, but welcome to DU anyway.
I heard a guy tell of seeing a dragonfly with a 1+ ft wingspan trapped in a El station in Chicago. He set it free. Dang. Wouldv'e liked have had that thing examined.

11. I love dragonflies!
We ahve them in our backyard and they land on me a lot when I'm sitting outside. They don't bite and have kept the skeeters down so we can sit outside and swim in peace!:)
