So... that "Megalomaniac" song by Incubus is getting mighty popular...
... out here in the heartland. You can't turn on the radio or walk into a bar without hearing it absolutely blasting. I'm going to become incredibly sick of it any minute now.

When the video was released, featuring Adolf Hitler, and an unnamed leader who resembles Bush, controversy surrounded this song. The band always insisted that an anti-Bush song/video was not their intent, but any savvy media-watcher can likely chalk that up to good PR.

The connection has been made, and the deed is done. It may be an older tune to those on the coasts, but the song is just seething with popularity here in the Midwest. I mean, for comparison, it's close to reaching "Smells Like Teen Spirit" popularity...

Is this song part of the F911 "movement"? It's harder for me to believe that it's just a coincidence.

1. I can't stand most of Incubus's work, but I've been listening to that
song for months. I'm tempted to pick it up when the CD is cheaper, but money is too tight to risk on a CD that I might just like one song at the moment.

2. I've heard that song on the radio a lot (I'm in Boston.)

I had not idea what the song was, but I kinda liked it. Now that you brought it up in relation to bush, I think I like it more. :-)

There aren't many lyrics to the song, really, but that line always struck me, and long before I saw the video, too. It's easy to see where those particular lyrics could be considered inflammatory.

Step down, step DOWN..

November can't come fast enough.

4. Incubus rocks!!!
Song #4 on "A crow left of the Murder" is another subtle message to b* and RW media.

#4 - Talk Show on Mute

- I'm slightly biased - my teen-age daughter plays guitar in a band that covers almost every Incubus song.

We took her to see them in Bozeman when she was thirteen and she's been rocking ever since.

5. This is good to hear ! & so are Incubus

There's another song coming your way by Incubus.

From their Album

A Crow Left Of The Murder

TalkShow On Mute

Take a bow
Pack on powder
Wash 'em out with buzzing lights
Pay an audience to care
'Impress me' personality

Still and transfixed
The electric sheep are dreaming of your face
Enjoy you from the chemical
Comfort of America

Come one, come all
Into nineteen-eightyfour
Yeah, three, two, one...
Lights! camera! transaction!

Quick, Your time is almost up
Make 'em forget that they're the moth
Edging in towards the flame
Burning to obscurity

Still and transfixed
The electric sheep but dreaming up your fate
We judge you from the card castle
Comfort of America

Come one, come all
Into nineteen-eightyfour
Yeah, three, two, one...
Lights! camera!
Yeah!
Come one, come all
Into Nineteen-eightyfour
Yeah, three, two, one...
Lights, Camera, Transaction!

Come one, come all
Into Nineteen-eightyfour
Yeah, three, two, one...
Lights, Camera, Transaction.

Your foundation is canyoning
Fault lines should be worn with pride
I hate to say it
But you're so much more
You're so much more endearing with the sound turned off

11. That's a great song.
The album is worth every penny. I also hear "Talk Shows on Mute" as an indictment of the current media pack-dog situation.

8. I haven't really thought of that song as strictly being about Bush
But I certainly thought that it could be applied to him.

I think the timing of the song being popular at the same time F9/11 came out is purely coincidental. That song was in the works a long time before the movie came out.

Megalomaniac
by Incubus

Album : A Crow Left Of The Murder...

I hear you on the radio
You permeate my screen, its' unkind but
If I met you in a scissor fight
I'd cut off both your wings on principle alone
On principle alone

Hey megalomaniac
You're no Jesus
Yeah, you're no fucking Elvis
Wash your hands clean of yourself
Baby just step down, step down, step down

If I were your appendages
I'd hold open your eyes
So you would see
That all of us are heaven sent
And there was never meant to be only one
To be only one

Hey megalomaniac
You're no Jesus
Yeah, you're no fucking Elvis
Wash your hands clean of yourself
Baby just step down, step down, step down

Step down
Step down
Oh step down

Yeah
You're no Jesus
You're no Elvis
You're no Jesus
You're no Jesus
You're no Elvis
You're no answer

Step down, step down, step down
Step down

Hey megalomaniac
You're no Jesus
Yeah, you're no fucking Elvis
Wash your hands clean of yourself
Baby just step down, step down, step down

13. Very cool; Incubus isn't really fooling anyone.
Notice how the first stark image of the video is a TV screen with the words "Brain Washing."

There's also a politician who is clearly meant to be Tony Blair, holding a baby... and the gas pumps, the oil, the leader, and the eagle biting his head off... c'mon Incubus... you're really not fooling anyone. :D

"Ye Holy Buy Bull," reads the cover of the Bible at the end of the video...

Thanks for that link, kheph!

23. I can't get the video for Megalomaniac
That's the one I really want to see, and when I click on it, it says video for a different song (the one with the word 'crow' in the title). Looks like I'd have to download a plug-in to see it anyway, and I don't want to bother if I can't see that particular video--you've got me so curious about it. :-)

28. I don't know either, but it finally worked!
I downloaded the plug-in, and even though it had the title of a different song on the site, it gave me something to click on to see Megalomaniac. Thanks. Not sure if I got it, but it was interesting. I think I'm just too tired now; I'll have to look at it again tomorrow.

I'm a Hoosier too and first heard about the song a few weeks before the CD came out.

Then again, I do pay attention to anti-Bush news a bit more than the average Hoosier (Other DU Hoosiers excluded, of course).

I like the song but had never seen the video. I loved it!

I'm glad they had the chutzpah to make this thinly veiled protest! Good for them. My husband says they banned it from MTV...is that true?

I despise MTV anyway, but that would suck!

Regular day time rotation despite it's popularity & only played very late at night. As far as I know

I think only MTV2 still plays videos outside of "TRL".

I'm really disappointed they haven't been integrated into VH1's "I Love the 90's" series. :D
