Queer As Folk Fans?

Is anyone here a fan of the Showtime series "Queer as Folk?"

I just bought the 3rd season on DVD yesterday, and have missed every episode this current season. :( I think my roommate is now addicted to the show.

Just curious... :)

1. I have the first and second years on DVD, and have sporadically

watched on Showtime. The show depresses me though. It's very well made, but I'm not always comfortable that it depicts a kind of dark underbelly of homosexual life, that does not translate to my own experience... all the guys seem to go to the same bar EVERY weekend... bathhouses... promiscuity... even the only female couple on the show couldn't manage to stay faithful.

Certainly it does portray somebody's experience as a gay person, but it's a bit frustrating to have this be the ONLY (aside from the L-Word) show about homosexuals and be so irresponsible about it. (The L-Word also bugs me for the same reasons.)

2. It is a bit depressing

...when you analyze it on a deep level...I think it was the intent of the producers to sensationalize many parts of the series to create that "wow" factor, but also to keep some noticeable traits that would appeal to a broader audience.

I don't discredit the show for the dark tones of the lifestyle as I know the difference between sensationalism and realism. It's those who don't know who turn the stereotypes generated by the series around and use it as a weapon...

But It's better than General Hospital...lol :)

3. Yes, definitely far superior to General Hospital...

(though I've never watched soap operas). I absolutely love watching the L-Word, even though it irritates me. I guess we should be grateful that there are shows that depict ANY gay experience other than the occassional gay guy as the comic relief in a sitcom. :shrug:

4. Maybe

gay show producers think that if they were to follow in the footsteps of other drama's, that they will bore their audience to death. Maybe a show on the gay mafia? :D Of course it's an advertising "do" that when your selling a product to the gay community, it doesn't hurt to insert sexual innuendo every 10 seconds to get your point across.

lol @ gay guy as comic relief. That reminds me of the occasional skits that Ross the Intern does on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

we don't get that channel so we watch it when/as DVD's come out

6. I am dying for season 4 dvd to come out.

We used to have Showtime as part of a package (brokered by our homeowners association); after episode 4 of this season, they changed the package and dropped Showtime, added HBO. So I am dangling. Sure, I know some of what's going on, but I am anxiously waiting for the Season 4 DVD to be released.

7. Understanding that its not meant to be a documentary,

yes, we like it. Its been very depressing this season, and last weeks show ended on a VERY high and positive note (and no, I'm not going to spoil the surprises for you). Tonight's the season finale and I have a very bad feeling about at least two story lines.

9. Michael and Ben storyline...predictions?

The description from TiVo says that Michael and Ben have problems crossing the border tonight. My question is is that because of...

(1) Their new marital status,
(2) Not being Hunter's birth parents, or
(3) Other?

10. Hadn't yet read that....

I can't see why they would have trouble, but SOMETHING bad is about to come down-too many people are too happy. I'm afraid Debbie's fiance may be sacrificed, and Brian is pushing things WAY too hard. Throw in trouble for Michael and Ben over Hunter and you have the makings of a season finale, alright.

8. yes, we have watched every show

but haven't bought it on dvd.

i think it is more representative of life in some of the gay ghettos, but is certainly not an accurate depiction of gay life in general. it is a great soap opera.

i think there is too much gratuitous sex. not that i don't enjoy watching sex. :-)

the guys are good actors. i actually forget that only two or three of them are actually gay (i think emmett, ben and justin).

this year's theme song is much better.

queer as folk, six feet, and queer eye are our three must watch shows each week. when they were on the list included deadwood and carnivale.

cable premium channels are where the innovative stuff really is.

11. Watched every season so far.

They could make a whole show with Brian Kinney character
IMO.

Gets a bit to soapy for me sometimes.

I enjoy the original British version also.
