I really need my butt to be repaired ASAP as I have a long drive ahead of me and the thought of having to sit on this for hours on end makes me wanna
Although, once I reach my destination I'll have plenty of time to sleep and rest it so I guess that's not too bad.
Some serious R and R should have it back in tip top condition in no time....I hope! :P

was the remedy my wise herbalist grandmother always concocted for laryngitis or sore throat.
Unrelated to your problem, but I recall that she prescribed asafoetida (ass-a-fet-id-e) for chest colds. The name was very appropriate; it smelled like fetid ass! She would take a couple of tablespoons of this herb and tie it into a bag with a string so that the unlucky patient could wear it on his/her chest. It stunk up the room in no time, and I would feign wellness even if I felt ready to cough up a lung!

I know it is hot outside, but if you can stand it, put a pan on the stove and put water in it. Bring it to a boil and stand over it, inhaling the steam. This will help-along with rest. Good luck!

once told me to drink ginger tea. . . take a small piece of ginger root, chop it fine, putting it in a strainer is optional - I like the little bits of ginger floating around, add hot water, let steep (I found 5 - 10 minutes made a pleasant tea for my taste), add honey and lemon to taste and drink - I wasn't back to full voice for a couple of days but I was able to get through all of our performances that week. I know that tea made from anise seed (coarsely ground) is good for sore throats, very soothing if that's what has contributed to your laryngitis. I have never tried to use dried, powdered spices for this. . . fresh is better in my opinion. While neither will cure throat ailments, they are soothing. About the anise seed - you really have to like the taste of licorice for this one. Don't like ginger or licorice? Catnip is good for pretty well everything that ails you. It makes a nice light green tea - sort of grassy smelling - and your cats (should you share your life with feline companionship) will be most attentive.
Do not speak from this moment on - unless you absolutely must. The more you speak, the worse it's going to get. Don't bother answering the phone - the person on the other end won't be able to hear or understand you. When you must speak - don't push the voice - stay relaxed and don't try to be heard - the harder you push your voice to be heard the less it will be heard and the likelier you will be to lose it completely. If you feel that you have to push for any sound to be heard - write notes instead. Unfortunately, once the voice starts to go, there is nothing to do but wait it out. In my case, laryngitis from colds/sore throats doesn't last as long as when it's been caused by straining my voice.
To sum all of that up - Relax, have a nice hot bath and "cuppa", enjoy the silence. . .

BD, it all depends on the cause of your laryngitis. Stay away from decongestants UNLESS sinus drainage is causing the laryngitis.
Anything you can do to keep your mucous thin and keep the humidity raised inside your nose and throat is the best thing for plain-old vocal fold edema (swelling) due to abuse or overuse.
So... drink lots of water (this will thin out your mucous). Teas are good (because of the heat and raised humidity in the mouth) just watch any with caffeine, remember, it's a diuretic and would defeat the purpose of hydrating. Steam is good for the same reason.
Most of all.. don't talk. Don't even whisper, that's worse. Just give the swelling a chance to go down. Resist the urge to cough or clear your throat. The swelling makes you feel as if there is something you need to clear out. Avoid it as much as you can. To your vocal folds, clearing the throat is an equivalent to someone smacking you hard in the shoulder 4 or 5 times in a row. It WILL prolong the swelling.
A steroid shot should be your last resort if you absolutely HAVE to get back going. It tends to bring the capillaries closer to the surface of the vocal fold, increasing the chance for a nodule or granuloma later on. (I did have a steroid shot one year the week of choir contest. Vocal rest just wasn't an option)
Hope you get to feel better soon.
The ChoralScholar

49. That's the part I don't understand |
|
There doesn't seem to be any real reason for it. I was fine yesterday during the day. Last night I got a slight sore throat, went to bed and woke up this morning barely able to talk. It's gotten progressively worse all day, and now when I DO have to talk, what I do get out sounds very very strange... almost as though there is something vibrating inside my throat.
I will try to rest it as much as I can and take all the advice you guys gave in this thread. Thanks everyone

I tend to buy the story that she wouldn't be posting if she had a gadget like that. If that were the case I'd start to get worried about her health.

54. you may have a tonsil infection |
|
or some other glandular thing that has spread down to your vocal folds then. In that case, it's best to see a doctor to make sure you don't have something other than laryngitis, such as an infection, tuberculosis, smallpox, polio, or leprosy. On second thought, its probably just an infection. :)
Do everything you can to make sure the air you breathe isn't dry. It will help the discomfort.

If you are coughing take a cough supressant before you do any more damage to your vocal cords.
Sooth it with very mild tea with honey or candy (NOT menthol) cough drops.
Take a vow of silence for two weeks. Don't whisper, you still manipulate your chords when you whisper - you can't help yourself.
