Does Elton John Live on This PLANET?

Elton attacks 'censorship' in US

Elton John has said stars are scared to speak out against war in Iraq because of "bullying tactics" used by the US government to hinder free speech.

"There's an atmosphere of fear in America right now that is deadly. Everyone is too career-conscious," he told New York magazine, Interview.

...

The singer said things were different in the 1960s.

"People like Bob Dylan, Nina Simone, The Beatles and Pete Seeger were constantly writing and talking about what was going on.

Dear Elton: maybe if you were as busy listening today's artists' music as you are trying to hitch yourself to whatever passing star you can find to keep your career afloat, you might have noticed some people speaking out. Better luck next time.

1. I think Elton knows of what he speaks
You may not know this, but Whoopie Goldberg was dropped by Slimfast because of comments she made about Bush at a Kerry fundraiser. Actions like that confirm and validate what Sir Elton is saying. Yes, there are more speaking out but it is not yet a critical mass. Most average Americans are still warry of those who do speak against Bush.

9. So She Lost the Pitch Gig
But she's still speaking out, and she's not backing down from her comments.

It's a risk that some people are willing to take.

2. I think Elton John
has been a wimp for years. The singers in the 60's MADE a difference. They didn't sit around waiting for someone to do it for them.

3. I don't agree with Elton
I honestly think Elton John is wrong about this. There are many singers, songwriters and other entertainers who are speaking out and using their craft to further the message. What about Barbra Streisand? Incubus? Ozzy Osbourne?

Actually, it's ELTON who isn't saying much.

4. Is Reg gonna use his stupid, tacky Vegas gig as a pulpit?
Apparently, he is myopic in more ways than one

6. Yep, he's right.
There are some people speaking out. But we know the majority of Americans are waking up to the BFEE crimes. I don't see the majority of artists putting their careers on the line to oust Bush. I also don't see a lot of journalists willing to tell the truth, either.

He's right; there IS an atmosphere of fear, while he is unafraid and probably well protected enough to say whatever the hell he wants.
