July 19, 1954: Memphis gives birth to rock 'n' roll!

Fifty years ago today, the Memphis-based Sun Records released Elvis Presley's "That's All Right"/"Blue Moon of Kentucky." And popular music would never be the same! :headbang:

1. Well, All Right
as Buddy Holly might say.

(Hey! My Dad's birthday, too: cool. Thanks.)

2. Rock around the clock

March 31, 1953.

"Shake, Rattle and Roll" -- Bill Haley and the Comets version --

April 28, 1954.

On edit -- that was Big Joe Turner's hit, of course, though I'm pretty sure it was the Comets' version that took over KWKH (Shreveport, LA) in the spring of my 12th year.

"Well, all right" and "Corrina, Corrina" were Big Joe's, too.

Not to say anything against Elvis, to be sure ....

3. Rock around the clock was released in 1954 (Haley's version)
It was a B-side. It became a hit in 1955.

I know people like to debate the start of Rock and Roll, but it is impossible. The truth is though, Elvis changed it all.
BTW, I'm not accusing your post as a dis on Elvis.
