What's up with public org. telemarketers? Similar to LizW's post
Such as the Fraternal Order of Police, Firefighters Union, etc. While I fully support our local public servants, I don't need a call a day from a different organization like this. I don't know which organization is which and if they are truly legit.

Does anyone else have this problem, or is this just a Chicago thing?

1. I figure...
my taxes pay these people.

I don't have a pension or health care. I don't have a union. I don't get triple overtime.

And if I got shot, the Mayor wouldn't be making a photo op of it.

Now, it's OK that they got OK paychecks now, and great bennies, but don't come to me looking for handouts for them.

So, I just tell them I'm unemployed and call me back in a year.

2. Not just Chicago.
I get a ton of them here in NH. It seems to have started after I moved up here and got a post office box. I don't think these organizations are included under the no call rules. They may be legit, I don't know, but I'll bet they have a huge overhead. I tell them that I'm giving to my local police and fire. I also get calls from a national vets group. When you ask them to send you something in the mail about their organizations, they usually say that they don't do that.

3. I never know if they're real or scams.
Some scammers pretend to be raising money for a police group, figuring people will want to give. Some real groups may make calls too, I don't know, but I wouldn't donate to someone who calls anyway, even if I did have money to donate.

4. If our internet line is open for half an hour, we're garenteed to get
calls from public serv.(legit) and telemarketing people (who say they're doing a "survey").
