Cows.

I got to help move some cows from one pasture to another today, and cut Scottish Highland cows out from the rest of the herd into a different pasture. I've never seen a Scottish Highland cow before today. I may drop the yaks to become a highland cow fan. They are quite docile, and definitely decorative, so allow me to introduce you:

1. They look like something you'd see...

to pick them out of the herd. The rest were longhorns.

It can be the femmy-guy of cows... even though cows are all female...

7. The 3rd pic is a bull.

The bull we moved today was quiet and friendly; he could have been moved on foot. His owner just held a gate open, pointed, and stood there while the bull ambled on through. We weren't on foot though; the longhorns aren't that predictable.

Wow, you had a great day didn't you? Nothing more serene than pushing a herd! I have never seen this breed, they are beautiful. We cut longhorn and buffalo but never have I seen this kind of cow. They do not look docile. Thanks for the introduction.

8. What's it like to cut buffalo?

I've always wondered. These guys were in with longhorns; we were moving them out. The longhorns were not nearly as docile and predictable!

15. They are cagey

and can be mean. We use the smaller, younger ones if we can because if a cow can slam you a buffalo can do worse. The main reason we use them for training is that they do not sour like cattle do. They are always up for a good run and can turn on a dime and will challenge your horse. I like using them if they are small but I am not about to use a bigger one that could hurt my horse. I have pushed the bigger ones but they are mostly OK if you do not separate them.

18. That is something I'd like to see someday;

with young buffalo, that is. There's a place a few miles down the road that raises a handful of buffalo. I've never actually seen them move them.

9. I live in southern california.

I have no idea where they got these guys; I'd never even heard of them before. Quite a crowd gathered to watch; apparently they are a novelty even to the local ranchers.

16. I've seen Scottish Highland cows a couple of times.

At 'exhibits' of bovines, you know, fairs and such. I love cows and loved seeing them when they'd be around here. (I also collected all kinds of bovine tchotckes (sp) and kitchen items. I think cows are cute; I like Holsteins (I tend to like black & white animals) and Jerseys have such sweet faces. Belted Galloways are cool looking. But the Scottish Highlands are such a different-looking cows. You just want to brush their hair out of their eyes--so cute. :-)

23. Had a small herd down the street........

Loved looking at them as they are beautiful. As it turned out the wife of the guy who had them got gored because she came up on mother of a calf at night. Not a smart move with any animal. She lived but the husband sold them shortly afterward. Another friend of mine has a few head and loves having them around.
