My Girlfriend Says I'm Weird Because I Do This With Clothing....
I wash them immediately after I buy them, before I wear them for the first time.

I'm not keen on wearing something who-knows-who tried on before me in the store and I like the feeling of a broken-in pair of jeans or a t-shirt or something.

Is that behavior unusual?
Should I seek professional help?
Am I really - *GASP* - weird?

1. Yes...
Heck, I buy clothes BECAUSE I don't have to wash them before wearing them. They're already ironed and stuff. Easier than doing laundry. :-D

3. I do that as well, for a number of reasons.
1. I hate that "new shirt" smell, especially on t-shirts.
2. Sometimes colors run if they aren't washed first.
3. God knows who had that shirt on before.

4. I do the same thing, Magic Rat.
When I buy clothes, I take them home and wash them. Before wearing them.

If you're weird, I'm weird, then. :-)

is right off the rack. I know it's entirely chemical based, but

Clothing is uncomfortable
if it hasn't been washed. The washing takes out some of the fiber and stuff and makes clothes easier to wear.

Most stuff you don't have to wash before wearing, but I had a bad experience with wearing a new pair of pants before washing them.

I usually wear khakis to work and I have them in a variety of colors. About 7-8 years ago I bought a pair from Banana Republic in a rich dark blue color. I wore them to work the next day and I got the worst rash imaginable over everything that touched those pants. I was working a busy helpdesk and I really wasn't allowed to go home, but thankfully someone had a pair of sweatpants with them that I ended up wearing the entire day.

So most of the times I will not wash new clothes unless they are dyed pants. Then I do it just because of bad experience. However, lately I'm even lax with that but only because most of my pants now come from L.L. Bean and I've never had any issue with their dyes. I really think it was a Banana Republic thing

11. Happened to me too, LynneSin
I actually had to go to the doctor for some high-test cortisone cream for the damn rash I got from a pair of new gym shorts.

10. Not at all.
Walk around the store where you shop. Find the person with the worst hygene in the building. Imagine him/her trying on your clothes first.

14. I always wash new clothes before wearing them.
One time I bought black cotton socks and wore them right out of the package. I got caught in the rain and the dye bled all over my feet. It took weeks for my feet to return to their natural color.

17. I would never wear something right off the shelf
Unless it was absolutely necessary, I wouldn't put something on that I just got. I think it's more "weird" to wear something that hasn't ever been washed. People might have been trying them on, or took them home and brought them back...who knows? Plus, as you said, they feel better when washed.

19. I love the new shirt feeling
Plus, cotton shirts always shrink and might be unwearable after being washed. If it's going to shrink, i'd like to at least have worn it once.

18. not odd - gets the worst of the dye/chemicals off of them
Although I must confess that I have bought new clothes just because I was too lazy to iron clothes I already had.

However, you may be weird for other reasons ;-)

20. No, you're not weird....
My wife (in her "other" life) was a Clothing Design and Textile Technology major...(stopped just short of her Masters).

She always washes new clothes before wearing them because of the finishes on the fabrics.

25. If that's weird then I'm weird too.
The rolls of fabric that clothing items are made out of are often stored for months before use. Often they are treated with chemicals to keep moths and other bugs away. Then there are the people who may try the item on before you do. I don't want anyone's cooties on me, yuck! And of course there is just plain dirt. Just because an item is new doesn't mean its clean. So yes, I wash almost everything new I buy, unless they are dry clean only sweaters--but these don't go against my skin. I either wear a turtle neck or shirt underneath. And I still check for one that has no evidence of being tried on. LOL.
