Yes, they'll be receiving a shiny new iPod, chock full of valuable info such as an audio tour, important campus phone numbers, etc. Because the very best thing to do, after the schools have signed agreements with the RIAA, MPAA etc to severly punish any student caught downloading copyrighted material, is to give them freakin' iPods.

Why am I in bizarro world?

(I have no link; I heard this on the UNC NPR station.)

1. I read this in my morning paper (online version).
There are universities giving laptops to incoming freshmen, too. I got a big pile of bupkus when I went off to college.

2. Three cheers for state colleges
These private school kids get iPods and laptops and what did I get as an incoming freshman?? An extra roomate...thats right tripled in the smallest dorms on campus. I haven't gotten my housing assignment for this year yet but I have the sneaking suspicion that there will be an extra roommate assigned to my apartment

4. As a friend pointed out...
I'm sure that $200 iPod will easily be tacking another 2 grand onto the already ridiculous tuition. :eyes:

The entire public education system in this country is a joke.

7. Higher education is slowly slipping out of the reach of the middle class
I opted to stay in-state to save money and I still will be close to 15-20 grand in debt when I graduate. The system is failing us all

9. The president of Duke would whoop your ass for calling Duke public
It is, strangely enough, a Church School. Buck Duke was a Methodist and gave a ton of money to Trinity College in Durham; they subsequently named the school after the Duke family.

And yes, I am certain Duke's adding a sizable chunk to the student fees for this iPod. I wonder if you can get this waived if you already have one.

11. Well, it's true
Duke is a private university, afterall.

I think it's kinda cool though. Wish I was just going off to college. *sigh*

20. Cripes - when I went to college, I took my new Atari 800
we didn't have computers for the students then. ALl we had were computer labs, in which everything was just a monitor and keyboard connected to the IBM PDP (Freshman year) and VAX 11/780 (sophomore year and later).

And that was an ENGINEERING college.

When I graduated, the 386 processor was just coming out, and the school had slowly moved into personal computers in the labs. And still the school was not telling incoming students that "You should have your own computer when you come" because they were still pretty much unaffordable and newfangled.

I remember doing LISP programming on our brand new, state of the art, monochrome Zenith 286 processor-based SUPERBITCHIN' desktop computers. :-)

My fraternity went from a 300 baud modem to a 900 baud modem in 1988 to connect with the school's mainframe. And that move from 300 to 900 felt like real time!!

Now the school is all wired, the fraternity has ethernet in the house, every room has multiple ethernet ports, etc.

I mean, think of this: the CD player, at an affordable level, appeared my second year of college. I paid more than $200 for my first one.

Ah, how the times change.

Damn kids, and their technology.
