11. You know, I used to think that they were depicted in a racist
manner, too. But I saw 'Dumbo' again recently, and I saw them in a whole new way. I thought the crows were smart and hip and funny; the best characters in the film. Do you not see it that way?

"Sleeping Beauty" has a great villainess and I always liked the story. "Fantasia" has some really cool segments-I'm not big on the "Rites of Spring" imagery, but the rest is cool.

14. Yes to Fantasia
Too bad the initial plan of updating it every few years never came to fruition. I can think of a ton of pieces that would have translated to some great animation (Pictures at an Exhibition, the Moldeau, Symphony Fantastique, etc)

Fantasia 2000 was entertaining but lacked a bit of the magic of the initial one.

9. Spirited away
I was fascinated by My Neighbor Totoro, an earlier animation by the same director, and began searching out others by him. But "Spirited Away" is easily his best, as well as being the best on this list (my opinion :)).

Here's the Amazon.co reviews: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/customer-reviews/B00005JLEU/ref=cm_rev_all_1/104-4184535-8492729?%5Fencoding=UTF8&me=ATVPDKIKX0DER
Better than renting the DVD, buy it so you can watch it as frequently as you wish. It gets better each time, and your spirits will also be lifted each time. The English voices are outstanding, although I usually opt for the original Japanese with English subtitles. The bonus material which covers the making of the film in great detail, is also well worth a second viewing.

pnorman
PS: I also have that Grave of the Fireflies. I'd heartily recommend Spirited Away to a child, but I'd hestitate doing the same with that Firefly one (at least not to an American child).

39. Just my dos pesos, but I think ANIME BLOWS!!!
Those people can't animate their way out of a wet paper sack. The Hannah Barberra limited animation style has more movement than your average episode of Dragonball Z.

I am married to an animator. I know from these things.

I don't care who you're married to - that's good animation. I went to school with animators so I know from these things.

49. ANIME (read Japanese animation)
Ghost in the Shell, Akira, and Princess Mononoke are not representative of the vast majority of ANIME. Most of the stuff that gets cranked out looks like Dragonball Z. Here is just a short list (as dictated just now to me via MSN messenger) from a professional animator why most ANIME is pure crap:

1. Too few in-betweens.

2. Limited animation. (only animating one element while all the others are static, leading to mechanical stiffness in the characters)

3. Character locomotion. (Movement rarely shows any attention paid to the way actual people or animals move.)

4. Overly-complex design. (Excessive amount of lines in the characters leads to the figures constantly going off-model during animation. The figures lose consistency of volume from frame to frame.)

52. Agreed - just wanted to clarify. Some of those anime shows are done on the
the 3's damnit!!!! That's just sloppy. Alot of it is pap - plain and simple. And the same goes for the world of manga.

So - where does your husband work? I love animators - they are the best folk!

That cel looks familiar. This wouldn't be a Japanese film about the bomb being dropped with the brother and little sister hiding in a cave would it?

I saw it a few years ago on the anniversary when the USA dropped the BOMB and it was the saddest I've seen it a long time. I just cried and was sad for days over it. Can't remember the name but this reminded me of it. Thanks.
