And if I had a pony I'd ride him on my boat
If I had a boat
I'd go out on the ocean
And if I had a pony
I'd ride him on my boat
And we could all together
Go out on the ocean
Me upon my pony on my boat

The mystery masked man was smart
He got himself a Tonto
'Cause Tonto did the dirty work for free
But Tonto he was smarter
And one day said kemo sabe
Kiss my ass I bought a boat
I'm going out to sea

1. If I hadn't had that horse....
I wouldn't have spent that year in college.

2. I love that song
Lyle used to introduce it at concerts by saying "This next song is stupid and I'm really sorry I wrote it."

3. And that intro's just one more reason to love the guy
A true original. His version of "Friend of the Devil" (on the Grateful Dead tribute CD "Deadicated") was AMAZING.

4. I heard this song for the first time on WXRT
driving from Chicago to Milwaukee and fell in love with Lyle's music.

Saw him on tour with his large band that year. One of the best shows ever!

5. Never cared for that song...
A guy riding a pony on a boat just sounds so Jimmy Buffett pre-tarded to me...

I really love a lot of Lyle's stuff, but when he misses, he misses by a mile... like that song about the church service that runs long and everyone starts thinking about lunch. Lame...

Great Lyle songs (off the top of my head)
Acceptable Level of Ecstacy
Goodbye to Carolina
Stand By Your Man
Blues Walk/Here I Am
She's No Lady
Once is Enough
God Will
Cowboy Man
I've Got the Blues
...and others I'm spacing.

But not the Pony Boat song. Sorry...

6. I LOVE "Church" but I think the thing I like best about it
is the back up / gospel-esque singers, they all are just phenomenal. Incredibly done live.

There's a special place in heaven for Lyle Lovett

I heard the ambulance screamin' down Main Street
But I didn't give it a thought
It was my uncle Eugene
He died on October
the Second,
Nineteen-eighty-one...
