I just registered to vote as a Democrat... ask me anything. |
|
That's right folks, until now I was not really a Democrat. I've been posting here under false pretenses.
As a matter of fact, until today I had never been registered to vote in my entire life and I am 38 years old.
I met with some local Democratic activists who I had gotten to know on a message board and got it done. Now I can vote for "Not Bush" in November.

We're the same age, by the way.
And now, my question: Why did you wait to vote until you were 38 years old?

3. I mean no disrespect at all, |
|
but why did you wait?
I registered before noon on my 18th birthday. I can't imagine not voting.
I am honestly curious.
Why wait so long?

Some folks growing up in and after Vietnam saw it as a waste of time. I know that sounds nuts, but it is true. My dirty little secret: My Janet is 48 and this will be her FIRST Presidential election!
But I have voted since 18, when I was in the Air Force.
Welcome to DU, hope you enjoy it as much as some of us!!!

I lurked for ages (and I'm still rather nervous about posting, as I am not at all confrontational IRL). So far, I like being a member even more than lurking! :7

I have a better idea than voting for "Not Bush"
How about voting for John Kerry!

When I say I will vote for "Not Bush" meant I would use my vote in the way most likely to diminish Bush's chances of being elected.
That means my vote will go to Kerry.
I would rather have given it to Kucinich though.

11. I understand what you mean |
|
I just would like to see Democrats get more enthusiastic about Kerry, rather than viewing their vote as nothing more than an anti-Bush vote. It's much more positive to vote FOR something than AGAINST something.
Anyway, I predict that Kerry is going to impress a lot of his skeptics in his first term. I hope you'll be one of them!

8. It is people like you that will make sure we WIN! |

I understand being discouraged with politics in this country, and feeling one's vote doesn't count. I really felt that way after the last presidential election.
I guess after we worked so hard to get the vote lowered to 18 instead of 21, I just felt I should vote. Add to that, all the hard work women did for decade, after decade, after decade to insure me the right to vote, and not voting would be disrespect to those amazing women.
I really believe that if all the non-voters register and vote, we will make a big difference. I don't believe that the majority of the people in this country support conservative born again Christian government. If the the majority votes, Bush is History!

9. Why did I wait so long? |

Well, I have always been somewhat apathetic and apolitical. I really saw no huge difference between the two parties. So I suppose I just didn't care enough.
As a matter of fact I am still all those things.
However, I began to take notice when the Clinton Scandal began to heat up. I got a little worried when people began to come on my TV and talk in very serious tones about Clinton having sex. It concerned me when these people all told me this was something I should think was extremely important.
I became even more concerned when articles of impeachment were brought against Clinton. However, I still was not motivated to act.
After watching the 2000 election I realized that we (anyone who is not a neo-con) are literally fighting for our livelyhoods, if not our very lives.
Make no mistake though, I am really not a big Democrat although I registered as one. My sole motivation for every political action I take is to damage Bush and nothing more.
I will vote for Kerry because it serves that purpose, however if Kerry does not begin to withdraw troops within 30 days of taking office I will attack him with the same commitment with which I now attack Bush.
