"Master and Commander" question |
|
I finally got around to watching the adventure film "Master and Commander" last night on PPV -- but it was my bad luck that the macaws here started SCREAMING during the last 5 minutes, so I have no idea how the darned story ended.
I got to the part where the ship's doctor is criticizing the French doctor who is on the other ship, and Russell Crowe says something about the sword he was given by him --
PLEASE somebody tell me how it ended!!!

was actually the French Captain so Crowe turned the ship and headed off after the prize ship.

2. Doctor was the Captain |
|
The man who died on the French ship was not the Captain. The man pretending to be the Doctor was actually the Captain. Aubrey realized this and turnded around to catch up to the French ship.

4. Do you wish to elaborate? |
|
Why did you dislike it so?
I must say that my enjoyment of it was not undiluted. Much of the dialogue was badly recorded -- even though everyone SHOUTED at one another, it was hard to make out what they said -- and it was a bit thick on the Brit noble aristo and jolly jack tar jingoism stuff -- although I think it did a fine job of showing naval tactics of the time.

5. Have not seen the movie |
|
Two years ago I read the complete series of books. After that I know they would really screw up the movie.
I bought all the books as a set on ebay for $125, when I finished reading them, sold them on e-bay for $245.
Excellent series but you must really enjoy reading to complete them all.

7. Maybe its the times but... |
|
I hated that the whole movie was about a guy pursuing a dangerous, unauthorized military goal, putting himself and his crew in unneccesary peril out of..... ego.
The film was also pretty plotless: Ship captain chases other ship. The End.

8. During the Battles and the Storm |
|
I had no idea what the hell was going on. I didn't feel a damn thing for any of the characters except the British doctor/naturalist, and didn't give a shit one way or another what happened to them. The plot was slow and repetitive (where it existed at all). At the end, we find that we're pretty much where we were to begin with (ship chasing other ship).
It just sucked for me.

13. You really should read the books (all 20 of them) |
|
The books flesh out the characters much better. I never thought 18th/19th century British naval fiction would be my thing, but I couldn't put them down (I've read the entire series four times now).

6. Do you know about www.themoviespoiler.com? |

A great site when you want to know what happens, but don't want to see the movie. Here's the Master and Commander page: http://www.themoviespoiler.com/Spoilers/masterandcommander.html

9. My sister was assistant director of the second unit on the flick... |

making my daughter (age 19) totally envious because she got to go to the Galapagos. If you're interested, rent the extended DVD and look for the added bit called "100 days" - really interesting stuff.

11. You should look out for the Hornblower series on A&E |
|
Same era with the British navy chasing the French in sailing ships - excellent back-stories, and Ioan Gruffud (I think that's how it's spelt) is easy on the eyes! http://www.aetv.com/tv/shows/horatio_hornblower/
