What band do you like that few people have heard of??

Me, a band called Bocca, I can't get enough. The singer's voice kinda sounds like Mark Sandman from Morphine. Check it out. I found this CD accidentally on the cdbaby website and have never turned back.

1. I always name the Droogs from LA

Their first single came out in '73 and was covers of "He's Waiting" by the Sonics b/w "Light Bulb Blues" by the Shadows of Knight.

But they're contemporary. "We've Got Blood On the Toes of Our Boots" (Acetate records) is one of the most beautiful live kick-ass rock and roll shows I've ever heard recorded.

6. The Bobs.

A fantastic accapella group. Unfortunatelly, two of my favorite members-Jaynie and Gunnar are no longer with them and the sense of fun seems to have been dimished. The replacement members seem too straight for my taste.
In 1983 they got a grammy nomination for their rendition of the Beatles "Helter Skelter".
Apart from their original works, they do great covers. My favorites are "Ring of Fire" and "Psycho Killer".

* The Three O'Clock, an Eighties neo-psychedelic "paisley underground" band that released several albums on IRS and Frontier.

* Scruffy the Cat, a Boston rockabilly act from the late '80s/early '90s.

* The Everyday Visuals. Local kids from Manchester, NH. Sure, they take the Radiohead meets Nirvana thing a bit too far, but in a town too often ruled by nu metal sludge, they deserve applause.

* Winter Hours. Southern-style jangle-pop performed by 5 guys from New Jersey.

* If you aren't from the Boston area, then you probably don't know about the Dropkick Murphys, a punk/Celtic hybrid...cal it Oirish, I guess. The Clancy Brothers meet the Clash and jam with those DC hardcore bands.

19. Check out their first record as the Salvation Army

They had to change their name, but Frontier rereleased it as "Befour the Three O'Clock." It's amazing. My fave tracks are "While We Were in Your Room Staring At Your Wall" and "Seventeen Forever." Great stuff. Gregg (Louis) Gutierrez (sp?) was a great guitarist.

I saw the Three O'Clock once with the Rain Parade and 54/40 at the Odd Fellows' Hall in Seattle.

26. OK, here's an obscure one

Firetown.

This was the band that Butch Vig and Duke Erikson played in before they met Kurt Cobain and Shirley Manson.

The debut album, "In the Heart of the Heart Country" is a wonderfully catchy piece of jangly roots-pop, with hints of American country rock, British Invasion pop, and jangly college alt rock.

Vig and Erikson went on to form Garbage, but Firetown is a completely different creature. The "Heart Country" album is, unfortunately, long out of print and damn near impossible to find.

My sister bought me the re-issue of "Arrive Without Travelling/Ever After" for Christmas. Dan, I'd forgotten how cool that was!

I was fortunate enough to see them perform at Walter Brown Arena (Boston University's hockey rink) as REM's opening act back in 1985. What a night!

I still love the snakey synth riff and tribal drums at the begining of "Spun Gold"...

13. Not sure what's known and unknown - but Dandy Warhols is one

I like the name and actually saw them live - which is saying a lot for a dude in his forties seeing a kid's band.

I actually heard them once on the radio on a public station (not NPR) that plays music 24/7 w/o commercials.

They play a kind of spooky and dreamy rock - to me anyway - but I like 'em.

And saw a guy attempt to stage dive. His leg fell through the barrier between the stage and the floor and he broke his leg. Not only did he break his leg, his bone popped out of his leg. It was gruesome. Great show though.
