They lived a few blocks from where their Alateen group met, and many of the kids would spend the night craashing in their living room.

I've been trying to cultivate the attitude that I'm a "cool parent" and am encouraging all the kids to make our house the "after school hangout"
(Gad that makes me sound like some kind of pederast! :( )

Makes it easier to keep an eye on my kids and also gives any of "the gang" a safe and secure place whenever they need one.

...that since their mother and I had them young, we were "cooler" than their friend's parents, since their friend's parents were all much older than us.

(Today, I'm 51 - my kids are 29 and 28. Their mother passed away six years ago...)
