NYC by Night *gulp* Help? |
|
I'm a Missouri girl and very soon I will be in New York City from around midnight until the next afternoon (getting a room the next day in Rhode Island).
Can anyone recommend some safe areas/activities I might engage in to pass those nighttime hours until the sun comes up and I can hit the morning shows in Times Square to pimp my website?
Very grateful for any advice.

1. NYC is not the crime ridden city that most people think it is. |
|
I just wouldn't go in the park at night.

I'm not all too worried, I just have a tendency to get lost in new places and I don't want to wander off to a bad spot. I figure NY is about as safe as New Orleans, and I've tromped all around those streets late at nite without much worry.
Thanks.

Manhattan "feels" a lot safer now than most parts of Los Angeles.
A real big change from my first visits to the Big Apple in the early 1980s.

Get out of Manhattan and things get easier. Take the subway out to southern queens, get close to the Atlantic Ocean and the bird sanctuaries.
A little desolate and not that New York-y, but something I did quite a lot of when I lived there.

11. Sheepshead Bay is in Brooklyn |
|
You do not want to spend the night there. There is nothing open. If you want to spend the night out in NY stick to the Village (either East or West). You can see a movie, you can eat and eat and eat-go listen to some jazz then eat some more. You can ride the Staten Island Ferry and watch the sun come up over the water. It will be great--- have fun

7. Stick to crowded, puclic, well-lit areas. |
|
That city really never does sleep. Never. And there's a lot less crime than there used to be. Still, avoid dark alleys and places where you can be caught alone, and you should be fine.

9. You can hang out in Times Square |
|
or sleep-seat in the LIRR waiting room at Penn Station (34th/7th) if you are tired overnight and wanna sleep.

10. If you just want to wander around and maybe get some coffee |
|
or some breakfast, you should just go down to the East Village. 24 hour coffee shops, a nice park, very late-night area, lots of people.

12. Times Square is totally cool |
|
at night--lots of people around--lots of interesting things to see--I'm a small-town girl from SC and have never felt frightened either time I've been to NYC. Just use common sense like you'd do at home and you'll be fine. Greenwich is also very cool to stroll around in. The great thing about NYC is that the "look" of the city changes every 20 blocks or so.
