I want the record, a photo and a brief explaination!

I call it "West Coast Gospel." The best 1970's "lifestyle" record ever.

"Benefit" by Jethro Tull. Both it and "Stand Up" are the best Jethro Tull ever made.

Ten Years After -- "A Space In Time". It not only has "I'd Love To Change The World", but virtually every other track on that album is killer, too.

34. Yep, here's the deal.

Tragedy has befallen another rock 'n' roll hero. On January 2, 1997, Spirit guitarist and guiding light Randy California, born Randy Craig Wolfe, drowned off the coast of Molokai, Hawaii.



He was on vacation visiting his mother Bernice Pearl, prior to a planned European tour by the rejuvenated and revamped Spirit. California encountered insurmountable while swimming with his 12-year-old son, Quinn. Fortunately, he was able to push his son towards the shore, but sadly could not save himself from the strong undertow that swept him away.

My brother was a bigger fan than I.....he had all of JoJo Gunne's albums and all of Jay's solo albums as well.

Saw an interview with Jay Ferguson and he just went on and on about Randy California, talking about his acoustic guitar on "Nature's Way" (his favorite song...and his 2nd fave? Silky Sam, lol).

2. Wilbert Harrison - "Let's Work Together"

It took Harrison close to 11 years to crack the Top 40 again after his #1 smash, "Kansas City." He finally managed in early 1970 with the two-part title track from this unheralded (but excellent!) LP, which spent a measly two weeks on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart.

Unfortunately, I couldn't get a good scan of the album cover, but here's the 45 RPM label of "Let's Work Together":

6. Sugarloaf: Green-Eyed Lady

Maybe not the best, but one which deserves a special cheesy 70's jam-rock mention. It's a treat when the title track pops up on classic rock radio.

He got to play with the band sometime last year (or maybe two
years ago now) in a quickly arranged reunion, I think somewhere
back east (New York?). Last year he suffered a heart attack and
was in the hospital for some time. Haven't talked to him since
probably the first of the year. Very nice guy.

11. Straight Up - Badfinger

Power Pop at it's best. This contains their last two top 20 hits in America, "Day After Day" and "Baby Blue". It also contained several top flight cuts like "Flying", "Money" and "Name of the Game". By 1974 Badfinger became yesterdays news and Straight Up went out of print.


A few years later Badfinger started to have a cult following and the value of Straight Up started to go through the roof in used LP circles. It was too pricey for me so I held off. Good thing I did. When the CD of Straight Up was released it had six bonus tracks including the USA remix of "Baby Blue".

Check this one out. It is a classic in my book and very underrated.

Song writing wasn't that great, but the guitar hooks and riffs are memorable.

Most people have never heard of this group. Love also was a California band, and to find someone east of New Mexico who knows them is rare. It makes me happy to find someone else who knows of Love.

Love Forever Changes is an album I spent my High School and College years playing over and over. I even ordered myself a new copy when I was in my 30s. I think it probably is time to see if I can find it on CD.

And I rank Forever Changes as the finest album ever made.

I have a very early LP pressing, but you can pick it up very easily at indie record stores, as it (along with the rest of Love's catalogue) was reissued about 3 years ago. You can pick it up on beautiful 180-gram virgin vinyl, or on CD.

67. Forever Changes is one of very few items that can be called timeless

The number of modern bands that use Love's orch pop as a template for their own sound proves that album will never be dated.

More so, even the lyrics are obtuse enough to never really be "out of date" which is a rarity for most albums created in the late 60's.

Can't listen to his "I Only Have Eyes for You" without getting a chill. One of the all time great romantic albums. It's a great documentation of his amazing voice as well. Guaranteed to give you 1975 flashbacks.
