The Dead dedicate "Desperado" to Linda Ronstadt |
|
Last night at the Indiana show, the Dead opened the second set playing "Desperado" for the first time ever. Apparently there was a very enthusiastic reaction.

They have an active voter registration drive at each show on this tour as well.
If you get a chance, go see them this summer as this year's band with guitarist/singer extrodinaire Warren Haynes and incredible lead guitarist Jimmy Herring have the band performing at high gear.
The shows at Red Rocks were incredible.

4. They didn't play it in Wisconsin on Saturday. |
|
At least, I don't remember them doing it. Damn those $7 beers!

7. Well, I'm not so sure RKZ..... |
|
The Dead covered lots of Merle Haggard tunes.....I can hear Bob Wier doing Desparado (I'm thinking 'Jack Straw' here).
Of course, Linda's version will be my all time favorite version.....
Gotta here The Dead's version, though!

9. I love the Dead, but I always thought they fumbled the ball |
|
when it came to cover versions.
a partial list of the Dead songs I'll be happy to never ever hear again:
Big River Gimme Some Lovin Devil With a Blue Dress Louie Louie Around and Around Johnny B. Goode Dear Mr. Fantasy Good Lovin' I Fought the Law
Garcia-Hunter was such a fertile songwriting team, I never understood the compulsion to cover so many tired-ass songs done to death by thousands of bar bands the world over. Give me a "Help-Slip-Frank" over a "Mama Tried" any day of the week.
And THE EAGLES?!? No fucking thank you.

11. I think the selection was less of a musical choice |
|
than a stand of support for an old friend. There is a lot of loyalty among the extended family and I think it is something to admire.

I'm not sure if that is a compliment or not. I sensed a reluctance to take risks -- those risks in the past often failed but when the paid of, WOW! The band is really tight though. Warren Haynes adds a lot to this line-up and they can still mess with your pretty good :)
