My co-worker says I'm mean-spirited for bashing Bush
I used to be friends with a guy in my department. We are no longer friends for other reasons but we clashed on politics.

He recently told me, "I can't debate with you. You are just too mean-spirited. You say all kinds of bad things about Bush and it's just not right. I won't debate someone who stoops to that kind of behavior."

WTF??

Mean-spirited? I don't even kill spiders! Just because I call Bush a liar (which he is) and point out that he used the war for evil purposes (which he did), does that mean that I am hateful and mean-spirited?!? WTF?

And tries to paint me as a heathen or something because I have anti-Bush views.

Tells me that he'll pray for me.

22. Bush isn't GOD
Every time he called me a Heathen, I would point that out to him. I would also point out that only the Anti-Christ would create such a "believe" in a man. I would be leary of any person who claimed to do the works of "God".

39. Ask him if he's ever read the second chapter of James.
I'm thinking of the passages condemning favoring the rich over the poor. It's rather devastating stuff.

As for this "Bush is a good Christian man stuff," well, I wouldn't presume to know what's in Bush's heart. But he has a very definite and observable mean streak. Witness the episode where he mocked Karla Faye Tucker AFTER she was dead (even conservative TV evangelists had called for commuting Tucker's death sentence to life in prison). Witness the almost gleeful way Bush referred to the upcoming executions of the murderers of James Byrd.

The Bible refers to the fruits of the spirit -- gentleness, self-control -- and I must confess such passages don't automatically bring to mind the behavior of one George W. Bush. It's kind of sad that people keep buying the notion of him as some spiritual leader. They must have pretty low standards for such things.

5. Calling him a liar is a non-starter...
He IS a liar, but using the term just lets your opponent turn you off, along with any cogent argument you may have. (Like invoking Hitler.) :eyes:

And what's all this about not killing spiders? It's your duty as a mammal at the top of the food chain to kill every spider you lay your eyes on! :scared:

11. I don't call him a liar
I say that he lied about the reasons that we went to war in Iraq. Then I proceed to list the reasons and how full of shit they are. It's all very civilized until the facts start mounting up against Bush and he gets mad. Then he tells me that I'm "mean-spirited" and ends the conversation.

Maddening!

I trap and release spiders. They kill the other icky bugs out there!

29. Ask him
"Don't I deserve the same ablity to speak about someone who's actions I don't like as YOU did about Clinton?"

I would also tell him that you can't help if he doesn't want to know about the very EARTH reality of "St. Bush." And that you understand how he doesn't want to hear things that are different then what he is being told about "St. Bush" at church. Makes a person question their faith and all they believe in.

Show him that you feel "sorry" for him.

I know I do. He sounds like one of those who are being PREACHED at about "St. Bush" and about being "God's choosen". Ya know, your not suppose to question "God's Choosen." He is being told that all the negative comments about Bush are just from "mean spirted" persons. He has believed it, and ignored all information that he is hearing that is different then what he is hearing at church. Cause it is all "mean spirted" and from "un-Godly" persons who don't truely know or understand God's will.

17. The best way to deal with him
Don't call Bush a liar. Merely point out the evidence, and let him draw his own conclusion.

Don't state your conclusion. Show your evidence (and make sure you've got a source he will consider credible), and let him draw his own conclusions.

19. No just honest!
No Rush Lamebrain and his sort....that is pure mean-spirited!

"I won't debate someone....blah blah blah" means that they can't beat you in the debate, so they aren't playing.

Michael Moore made a public invitation for Rush Lamebrain to debate him in public. Rush, of course, never bothered to answer. How could he even consider it. He can't deal with anyone's debate. I saw a Frontline (PBS) on Rush years ago. They showed some footage of someone raising questions to Rush, and Rush choked big time. The man can only rant and rave, but debate....NEVER!

While the other guests were having a decent well-informed political

I figure he knew damn well that they would rip him apart if he started his usual lies...

20. Bush supporters always say that.
They can't see the difference between anger over Bush's incompetence and corruption, and just plain hatred (like much of what is thrown at the Clintons). You shouldn't feel the least bit bad about saying Bush is a liar; it's true and you have the proof in case your friend ever cares enough to actually take a look.

My sister used to be a proud Democrat, but since she married a hardcore Repuke she's become a conservative zombie. She hates Kerry because of stupid sound bites she's heard (and misinterpreted) on Fox. She doesn't worship Bush, per se, but doesn't take the time to actually look at the facts and *think*.

32. He doesn't want to debate because he has nothing to use for points.
When you can't stand up for your side with legitimate points then you retreat and blame the opponent.

If he really felt he was right he wouldn't back down, it's just easier to blame you than accept the fact bush is an idiot.

Blame the opponent. There is a repuke that stops in my office every now and then to praise Bush*. Whenever I start bombarding him with facts to counter his RW talking points, he starts telling me my 'problem' is I don't listen to the other side, and maybe I should watch Faux news once in a while instead of reading books by Al Franken. Idiot.

33. Republicans are like children
they see things polarized into good and bad. They believe that poor people deserve to be poor and rich deserve to be rich (and un taxed). The "mean-spirited" thing is just a standard RW talking point. I agree with earlier posters, if you can get around the lying issue, maybe you can have a discussion but remember that Bush is a father figure for this guy.
