New Repub mantra: 'People hate Bush because he's a Christian'...
I've heard this from three different idiots in the past week or so. When you tell people how much the whole world despises the guy, they come up with this righteous 'Christian persecution' crap.

Truly insane and scary. Just when you think you've heard it all...

3. That's the scary, puzzling thing
To right-wing fundies Carter isn't really a 'Christian.' To these people even the Pope isn't a 'Christian.'

It's a kind of fascist Aryan identity, the cross and the flag wrapped together.

6. Well put benburch!!
That is exactly the correct reason. Pretending to be someone he isn't. Those devout Christians must really have deep reservations about their own beliefs and don't want to admit it to themselves, so having a pseudo-president as one of their own boosts their self confidence in their own belief system....

That is My Humble Opinion....

7. They are the spawn of Jerry Falwell
"Recent circumstances have led me to believe that
Christians in America are increasingly at risk of becoming not just
perpetual objects of ridicule, but potentially of being openly
persecuted and punished for their beliefs by those pressing the
absurd 'tolerance' agenda...One needs to look no further than the
recent verbal assaults on President Bush, who is outspoken about his
Christianity, to see how secularists are seeking to condemn him
because of his sincerely-held beliefs." - Jerry Falwell

13. The 700 Club is always crying persecution
When Janet Reno applied RICO laws to abortion protestors and clinic bombers, Robertson was crying daily about the persecution of good christians.
When the protestors would get arrested for blocking access and were then treated like anyone else who was arrested, he would cry that the police were strip-searching good christian people like they should somehow be treated differently than the people protesting outside of a nuclear power plant or something.

The type of christians like Falwell and Robertson feel that if they are not getting special treatment over everyone else, than they are being persecuted. That's why they push the whole "America is a christian nation" crap, so they can justify preferential treatment for christians (as they define it).

14. "President Bush, who is outspoken about his Christianity"
Jesus had something to say about people who wore their religion on their sleeves. Read his "woe!" to the Pharisees, Jerry. And read it to George, too.

It takes more than a chrome fish, pal. (see angryliberal.com)

I don't condemn him for his beliefs. I don't even condemn him because he makes his beliefs plainly known to all. I condemn him because his behavior does not line up with his beliefs.

Now: who wants jelly donuts?

9. How desperate!
Edited on Tue Jul-27-04 08:55 AM by H2O Man
I guess that represents a short cut to thinking in logical terms. But it brings up a good point: people like myself, who are "Christian" in the sense of being in agreement with what Jesus said and did (as opposed to worshipping the cartoon character on the stained-glass windows) would do well to go through the "good book" for references that do not judge Bush as an individual, but that expose his policies as being the opposite of Jesus's teachings. I would start with two obvious parts of the Old Testiment: Psalm 82, by Asaph, which is directed at the Bush and Ashcrofts of the day; ans Isaiah 58: 7-9, which is the foundation for the prophet Jesus.

11. It truuly boils down to the fact that a sizable portion of America
believe that God is partisan and a Republican. It has to do with this notion of American 'exceptionalism.' God made America, God loves America more than other places (except Israel).

I could go on, but we all know the rest.

15. Oh who are they kidding???
La Famiglia Arbusto worships power...they couldn't care less about the little baby Jesus. They'd happily toss the infant savior into a briar patch if it meant more power and prerequisites form them and theirs.
Jeb became a catholic to put himself over in Florida....GWB became a baptist primate to wow the Texans...if Neil ever gives up Thailand's hookers no doubt he'll convert to Islam or Chassidism if there is an advantage to be wrought from either faith.

The New Republic has gone over the hump...there is no question on that.

17. Ask them
"What type of Christian?"

Born again? Baptist? UU? Quaker? Morman?

When people say "Christian" they forget that there's sooo many different types. You can't say "Christian" and have it mean anything specific really.

20. more right wing logic
I know many good, thoughtful people who are Christians.

I also know many good, thoughtful people who are not.

I also know many hypocritical people who claim to be Christians in order to take attention away from the un-Christian lives they live and the bigotry and hatred they carry.

Guess which one I think Bush is...
