Most memorable sports moment that you've seen
I mean, we all have seen great moments in sports, but I'm talking about the ones that folks still talk about all the time. Like the ball that rolled between Bill Buckner's leg or the vault that Kerry Shrug did in order for the USA women's gymnastics to win the gold medal.

For me the most memorable was the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid. The USSR was the dominent force in Men's Hockey and out of nowhere came this scrappy team of players for the US. The USSR vs. US game was not for the gold medal but the winner would go on to play for it. I watched both of those games; heck my mother even let me stay home from church so I could watch the one game live on TV. They were both incredible games and I had the biggest crush on Jim Craig (US Goalie).

What is your most memorable moment that you've seen in sports

BTW - other one I remember are the Carlton Fisk homerun in 1975 (but Tony Perez's in game 7 was the one that really counted)

12. He could barely stand.
He limped around the bases.

The next night, NBC overlaid his home run with the scene from The Natural where all the lights are exploding after Roy Hobbs hit them. It was a nice piece of TV.

47. One of the most amazing moments in sports ever.
Edited on Tue Jul-27-04 02:13 PM by GumboYaYa
I still get chills down my spine hearing Buck call that one.

I also have to put Warremn Morris' walk-off homer to win the College World Series for LSU against Miami. Any walk-off homer to win a championship is big at any level. Being an LSU fan that was a giant one for me.

Also, McGwire's 61st homer was big for me. Buck called that one and it tore me up hearing him. I didn't actually see the shot. I heard it on KMOX. I was getting ready to take my family into a Steak n' Shake to eat and had to sit in the car for a few minutes to wipe the tears away before we could go inside. It was giant because the whole race to beat Maris had captured the nation that year and rejuvenated baseball. Number 61 passed Ruth and you could hear the awe in Buck's voice as the reality of that hit him. For Buck to get to make that call was the perfect allignment of the baseball stars.

4. In person:
I saw Ryne Sandeberg hit 2 HRs off of Bruce Sutter (the premier reliever of the day) in 1984 to win in extra innings
and I saw NC State defeat UNC when UNC was ranked #1 (basketball).

On TV:
Christian Laettner hitting "the shot" against Kentucky in the Regional Finals
Kirk Gibson hitting the HR in the WS against Eckersley and hobbled around the bases.

Both of those were completely amazing...

16. ya know...
His stats weren't really all that bad when he first broke into the league - he just always had a different kind of attitude that didn't fit in with the league - so he's always been kind of an outsider. It looks like he averaged about 16-18 points in his first 6 years.

Not a superstar by any means, but an above average player for sure.

41. I was there in'84!
Ryne Sandberg, as you said, hit two homers off of Bruce Sutter. Both were game tying homers, however. A guy named Dave Owen drove in the game winner in the bottom of the 11th. Never ever forget that game. June23, 1984. And on a sadder note, what Cub fan can forget Game 6 of the 2003 NLCS? Tried to, but I'm afraid its there forever. Another note about the Sandberg game, Willie McGee hit for the cycle that day, and that *^#! Ozzie Smith made some incredible plays at shortstop.

18. Atlanta Braves in 1992
Braves win Braves win!!!

Francisco Cabrera's two-out, two run bottom of the ninth pinch single and Sid Bream's slide into home sends the Braves to a 3-2 victory over the Pirates and into the 1992 World Series.

Bream seemed slow as molasses to me, he ran so hard and was almost limping (he had a bad knee), and when the ump yelled safe, I'll bet the rest of the US heard us yelling and whoopin' it up as we tend to do down here. It all poured into the streets, man what a great night. Toasty drunk, everyone happy with everyone, laughing, hugging, it was such a feel good moment.

After 20 years of watching the Braves suck, it sure was nice to have them win a few times.

Too bad the Falcons and Hawks can't do the same.

32. There are so many...
but two of my favorites are Franz Klammer's gold medal downhill run at the 1976 Innsbruck Olympics. To this day, I have never seen someone ski like that man did -- he just hurled himself down the slope, looking as if he was going to fly out of control any second. It was one of the most electrifying sports moments I have ever seen.

And also from the 1976 summer Olympics, when Japanese gymnast Shun Fujimoto did both his pommel horse and rings exericises with a broken kneecap/torn ligaments and got a 9.5 & 9.7. His form on the rings was just so exquisite -- I can't imagine the reserves he called on to pull off that performance.

Edited on Tue Jul-27-04 03:20 PM by LynneSin
and that was one of his more memorable hits because he didn't get it until the top of the ninth when he had to bunt to get the hit. Rose did the bunt because he wasn't really in a bunting situation (I believe the Reds were way ahead and it was the ninth inning with no outs). Since no one was expecting the bunt, Charlie Hustle was able to land one down the 3rd base line and hustle out a hit.

Edit note: When I say I 'saw' it I mean I was actually at the game in Philadelphia (my family would take me once a year so I could see a Cincinnati Reds game but we would go to Philly since we were closer. And BTW, the year before I got to see a George Foster Grand Slam homerun)

57. M's Beat Yanks in 1995 Divisional Playoffs
The M's made up 13 games in little over a month to force a one-game playoff with (then) California Angels, which they won. Then they lost the first two of a 5 game series with the Yankees, but won the next two to force game 5.

The Yanks took the lead off a tired Randy Johnson, who had come in as a reliever. Bottom of the 9th, M's down one, Joey Cora bunt single, Griffey single, then Edgar Martinez doubled to score Griffey from first base. The greatest sporting moment of my life, and the very second that Seattle finally became a baseball town.

last year when the Yankees beat the Red Sox to advance to the World Series.

There are so many great sports moments but this one is still so fresh in my mind.

The Yanks were down all game and I thought they were going down. I was at a local bar and just started to drink heavily since I was depressed over the game. Then the Yanks started to come back and when Boone hit that homer, I think I became sober with excitement. The bar was going nuts...it ended up being a great night.

59. Brett Favre's unbelievable performance
last year on Monday Night Football after his father passed away. Very few people could have done that. There is not a real fan in the world who would have blamed him if he chose not to play. But play he did. WOW! And the Pack needed that game.

61. You are so right.
That was amazing. I love Brett Farve. He's like a big kid who loves playing.

There is no give-up in him. That's what I admire the most in a sport figure. That's why Allen Iverson is my favorite Basketball player to watch.

I was actually there in the stands and saw it. And they're still talking about it at both schools, I've no doubt.
