Dookus, Tweedtheatre and Nickster are total...
PATRIOTS for bidding for democracy! THANK YOU! :yourock: :toast:

There’s less than TWO HOURS LEFT to bid for a KERRY VICTORY in ‘04! Proceeds from this auction go to the Kerry campaign. The winning bidder not only gives to Kerry, but receives a lot of FIVE GREAT BOOKS (great gifts!) on top of that patriotic feeling you’ll get of knowing that your best for our candidate!

Right now DOOKUS is the top bidder at $100! The folks at Smirking Chimp raised over $18,000 for Kerry on one thread. I know times are tough, and many have already contributed, but surely we can do better than $100!

(And yes, this auction is sanctioned by the Administrators)

Go here to bid: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x2067830

Kerry/ Edwards last minute fundraiser!

If you’ve already given the legal maximum to the Kerry / Edwards campaign, are not an American citizen but care about this presidential race, or just want to add to your library, this fundraiser is for you! I’ve wanted very much to give to the campaign over the past few months, but my finances are still in shambles (oh, that “surging” economy! My contracts have been “surging” overseas, and my medical bills have sent me “surging” into debt!) Thus, this auction. I will give 90% of all money raised to the Kerry / Edwards campaign (The other 10% will go towards paying off the credit card bills that come from the original purchases of these books).

Books are sold as a lot with a starting bid of $25.00. All are new except “Blinded by the Right” which is like new. All are hardcover, except the War on Freedom, which is softcover. Auction ends Tuesday July 27th at midnight EST. Payment is to be made by noon on the 28th of July via Paypal. All sales are final. Winner pays shipping, and will receive the lot of books plus confirmation of the Kerry donation as soon as it is received (donation will be made under the sellers name).

If you want your bid to remain Anonymous, please PM me and I will post your bid on the thread as such.

Thanks, and happy bidding!

THE BOOKS:

The Candidate

From Amazon.com:

The Candidate will reveal what accounted for Kerry's strong, decisive showing in every political contest since the Iowa primaries, and why none of those factors were evident in the pre-Iowa polls. It will explain how the Kerry campaign staged this surprise turnaround, what voters need to know about what goes on behind the scenes in the Kerry war room, and how the campaign is preparing for the run from July to November. Granted unprecedented access to Kerry's family, his campaign team, his advisers, and members of his inner circle, Alexander sheds new light on the man who would be president.

"Writing a book from the campaign trail presents a unique opportunity to tell an important national story with great immediacy," Alexander explains. "The John Kerry story is dramatic, as is the story of how his campaign came together. This is a very different organization than the one I reported on in 2002. How decisions are being made now is a key indicator of how decisions will be made after the Democratic Convention and in the White House, should he defeat President Bush in November."

“Dude, where’s my country?”

Book Description
When the powers-that-be succeeded in ignoring—and then silencing—the nation’s widespread dissent over war, one man stood on an Oscar stage and, in front of a billion people, outed the commander in chief for his fictitious presidency and his fictitious war. Now, just a few months later, those words have remarkably become the accepted truth of the land.

Yes, MICHAEL MOORE is the scourge of Stupid White Men everywhere. He’s taken on fat cats, gun nuts, lying politicians. The Guardian describes him as "a wake-up call, a kick in the mental backside." And now he’s back—daring to ask the most urgent question of these perilous times: Dude, Where’s My Country?

MICHAEL MOORE is on a mission in his new book: Regime Change. The man who slithered into the White House on tracks greased by his daddy’s oil buddies is one of many targets in Mike’s blistering follow-up to his smash #1 hit Stupid White Men, the biggest-selling nonfiction book of the year. Now no one is safe: corporate barons who have bilked millions out of their employees’ lifetime savings, legislators who have stripped away our civil liberties in the name of "homeland security," and even that right-wing brother-in-law of yours (yes, we all have one) who manages, year after year, through his babbling idiocy, to ruin Thanksgiving dinner.

Blinded by the Right

Book Description
In a powerful and deeply personal memoir in the tradition of Arthur Koestler’s The God That Failed, David Brock, the original right-wing scandal reporter, chronicles his rise to the pinnacle of the conservative movement and his painful break with it.

David Brock pilloried Anita Hill in a bestseller. His reporting in The American Spectator as part of the infamous “Arkansas Project” triggered the course of events that led to the historic impeachment trial of President Clinton. Brock was at the center of the right-wing dirty tricks operation of the Gingrich era–and a true believer–until he could no longer deny that the political force he was advancing was built on little more than lies, hate, and hypocrisy.

In Blinded By the Right, Brock, who came out of the closet at the height of his conservative renown, tells his riveting story from the beginning, giving us the first insider’s view of what Hillary Rodham Clinton called “the vast right-wing conspiracy.” Whether dealing with the right-wing press, the richly endowed think tanks, Republican political operatives, or the Paula Jones case, Brock names names from Clarence Thomas on down, uncovers hidden links, and demonstrates how the Republican Right’s zeal for power created the poisonous political climate that culminated in George W. Bush’s election.

Already making national headlines, David Brock writes with stunning candor about a fascinating but deeply disturbing period of American politics. Blinded By the Right is a classic political memoir of our times.

The War on Freedom

Book Description
A disturbing exposé of the American government’s hidden agenda, before and after the Sept.11, 2001 terrorist attacks. A wide range of documents show U.S. officials knew in advance of the "Boeing bombing" plot, yet did nothing. Did the attacks fit in with plans for a more aggressive U.S. foreign policy? Nafeez Ahmed examines the evidence, direct and circumstantial, and lays it before the public in chilling detail: how FBI agents who uncovered the hijacking plot were muzzled, how CIA agents trained Al Qaeda members in terror tactics, how the Bush family profited from its business connections to the Bin Ladens, and from the Afghan war. A "must read" for anyone seeking to understand America’s New War on Terror.

Against All Enemies

"The administration has squandered the opportunity to eliminate al Qaeda....A new al Qaeda has emerged and is growing stronger, in part because of our own actions and inactions. It is in many ways a tougher opponent than the original threat we faced before September 11, and we are not doing what is necessary to make America safe from that threat."

No one has more authority to make that claim than Richard Clarke, the former counterterrorism czar for both Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. The one person who knows more about Usama bin Laden and al Qaeda than anyone else in this country, he has devoted two decades of his professional life to combating terrorism. Richard Clarke served seven presidents and worked inside the White House for George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush until he resigned in March 2003. He knows, better than anyone, the hidden successes and failures of the Clinton years. He knows, better than anyone, why we failed to prevent 9/11. He knows, better than anyone, how President Bush reacted to the attack and what happened behind the scenes in the days that followed. He knows whether or not Iraq presented a terrorist threat to the United States and whether there were hidden costs to the invasion of that country.

Most disturbing of all are Clarke's revelations about the Bush administration's lack of interest in al Qaeda prior to September 11. From the moment the Bush team took office and decided to retain Clarke in his post as the counterterrorism czar, Clarke tried to persuade them to take al Qaeda as seriously as had Bill Clinton. For months, he was denied the opportunity even to make his case to Bush. He encountered key officials who gave the impression that they had never heard of al Qaeda; who focused incessantly on Iraq; who even advocated long-discredited conspiracy theories about Saddam's involvement in previous attacks on the United States.

Clarke was the nation's crisis manager on 9/11, running the Situation Room -- a scene described here for the first time -- and then watched in dismay at what followed. After ignoring existing plans to attack al Qaeda when he first took office, George Bush made disastrous decisions when he finally did pay attention. Coming from a man known as one of the hard-liners against terrorists, Against All Enemies is both a powerful history of our two-decades-long confrontation with terrorism and a searing indictment of the current administration.

2. Yeah, I know that cash strapped feeling
thus the auction. It's so sad; I looked at one of those sites that tells you how much people in your neighborhood are giving to candidates. The repugs in my area all contributed between $1000 and $2000 each, while the Dems average contribution was $50-$150. Limosine liberals my ass!
