Jude Law to play Ian Curtis in Hollywood Joy Division biopic - reports.
http://www.nme.com/news/109324.htm

Former JOY DIVISION bassist PETER HOOK has revealed that HOLLWOOD star JUDE LAW is tipped to be cast as the late IAN CURTIS in a new film about the band.

Plans for a biopic focusing on Curtis were announced at this year's Cannes Film Festival in May. The singer was just 23 when he committed suicide in 1980.

Hook said: "The whisper I've heard is that Jude Law will probably play the role."

He told the Macclesfield Express: "It's not a bad choice. The film is being made by Hollywood, but what's important is that they get the story right."

The film will be based on Curtis' widow Deborah's book 'Touching From A Distance', and it is rumoured that the film will be set in Manchester.

Producer Tood Eckert said: "We are speaking with an actor who is huge and looks rather a lot like Ian. He has just finished a couple of films in which the only thing he listened to was Joy Division and New Order."

He added: "Should this guy ultimately agree that he is going to play Ian, it would make it a much bigger film. Ian Curtis is one of the most important figures in the history of music."

2. I can't imagine a better movie on the subject than 24 Hr Party People
I know that was only maybe 10% about Joy Division, and much more about Factory Records. But I thought it combined the bleak aspects of Ian's life and Joy Divisions career, with the eternal optimism and quixotic approach of the Factory Records scene as a whole and the label's owner.

4. I love that movie......
Strangely enough I found it totally uplifting and inspiring. Just the idea that a few people with chutzpah and a dream can accomplish anything.

The only other movie that makes me feel that way is the Dogtown and Z-Boys documentary on the early days of skateboarding.

5. It's the fact that they were total amateurs with no money
and they still were able to build the best record label of their time.

6. I'm there...that's a GREAT movie!
24 Hour Party People ROCKED!!!

And quite honestly I think Jude Law is a bit too old to play Curtis, but we'll see...pretty cool that they think there's a big enough audience for this one!!!

8. loved 24 Hour Party People, but ...
their Ian Curtis was not attractive enough. That actor did a good job but frankly he looked more like Mr. Bean. Touching From a Distance is a heart-wrenching book, really conveyed what an enigma the guy was and how painful it was for those close to him, hope it does get made into a movie.

11. *banging head against the wall*
Look, I'm sorry. Number one, he's too old. How old was Ian when he died, 23? Law is over thirty. Number two, no film will be able to top the Curtis/Joy Division plot in "24 Hour Party People". It wasn't the entire focus of the movie, but it was shot like a documentary, and it's probably as close to the truth as one can get.

Bah!
