'Course Canadian Baptists may be very different from SBC Baptists, which is what I'm familiar with.

26. Go... you might actually meet some nice people |
|
:)
Just let them know that you are not interested in joining their church..(right now)..(give them some hope)..
If you make a few friends, who knows, you might end up meeting someone THROUGH them...
The ripple effect :)

some aren't bad. I've even been known to attend a church function or two and I didn't burst into flames.
But Baptist? Wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole, nope.
Still, it might be kinda interesting from the point of view of going into the trenches and listening to some seriously screwed up conversation. That's how I always approached it.
In the interest of full disclosure I am a Christian. Just not a big church person.

31. You know, the hostility is not productive |

I am an agnostic atheist (I do not believe in any gods, but i can't say I believe no gods can/do exist - that would require complete and perfect knowledge of the universe).
Although I will push back if somebody tries to push their belief structure on me, or if their brand of belief is potentially pernicious nonsense that could hurt others, I leave them alone, oterwise.
My wife (KCDem) is a liberal christian. Her father is a retired Presbyterian pastor, which makes her mom a pastor's wife. I don't have a problem with any of them, and often have good philosophical discussions with my father-in-law.
If I were single, I wouldn't turn down the invite. I wouldn't misrepresent myself to them, either, and if they could accept me as is, without annoying me with attempts to convert me, then I'd be happy to be a part of their social scene.
That being said, I have to add that even in a liberal christian church, I feel uncomfortable because i feel that if i told them I am an atheist, I would end up feeling like i don't belong.
