Poll question: Favorite Iron Maiden album
When I get psyched and fired up on coffee its time for the Tattooed Millionare to fire me into a foamy froth of fistpumpery!

6. "Somewhere in Time" is their best album
for two reasons -

Wasted Years
The Lonliness of the Long Distance Runner

Though, between Number of the Beast and Seventh Son of a Seventh Son there isn't a bad album at all.

Bruce Dickinson's solo album Accident of Birth is awesome too.

12. That...
...and in my case having two elder sisters who were into Iron Maiden. :-)

Next question, best Iron Maiden album cover? I nominate Somewhere In Time due to the sheer attention to detail on that album cover. :-) One of the great things about Maiden is that you can buy the albums for £5 just for the album cover as a work of art.

28. And that's only a small portion of it
That cover is great not just for cyborg Eddie, but also for the back with its numerous references to Maiden's past and even the Millenium Falcon and the Starship Enterprise flying around in the background!

The great thing about Somewhere In Time is that you can buy the LP for the cover alone and you will have a piece of art that will keep you interested for ages without even having to play the thing!

Though I love Ozzy-era Sabbath, Judas Priest, early Metallica, Diamond Head, et al. :hi:

18. Still- its like Spinal Tap (which seems most closely modeled after maiden)
They appeal to adolescent boys. Girls are intimidated - they had armadillos in their trousers - they run away screaming!

29. Me too!
I really tried to like them back in the early days, but I kept comparing them to Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Judas Priest, etc. I saw them in concert mid 80s - it was fun, but NOT like Sabbath. I really appreciate Maiden a lot more now, especially the early stuff like "Killers." Nothing beats Ozzy and Sabbath though, for "pure metal." No modern bands come to mind except Soundgarden or Ministry for having a good heavy metal sound.

Did you hear that Ozzy opened with "War Pigs" a couple of weeks ago and had a huge display of Bush next to Hitler? I REALLY want to see this!

14. I voted for Number of the Beast
because it was the first one that I bought. Later on I came to enjoy the early stuff with Paul Dianno (sp?) more. Killers and Iron Maiden have held up pretty well.

23. That's why I'm so glad you're a DUer
We come from different angles but reach the same place, and we do it in a civil manner. In your case, you're especially reasonable with those whom you don't disagree, and I respect you as much as anyone here. Unfortunately, I don't see your level of discourse all the time.

24. agreed - that's an understatement. I remember one thread where I
ridiculed NASA and the amount of money spent on space exploration when we have starving people. A bunch of eloquent DUers swayed me - they got me to see it in a different light - so I told them as much. When these people heard it they couldn't understand it.

My point is that it the exceptional DUer that can see outside their biases to real discourse. That's why I've sought out the usual suspects at the Lounge - we seem to be a little more rational (about certain things)

And I must say that this does not include Hedges - that rake!

31. Best Maiden song: The Rime of the Ancient Mariner
This song shows the absolute fearlessness of Maiden: who the hell else would do a fourteen-minute heavy metal song?

Jethro Tull did "Thick as a Brick," which is an album-length song, and Pink Floyd did "Wish You Were Here," which is also an album-length song (that was cleverly formatted so they could pull a few chunks out and make "subsongs" out of them) but neither of those bands is metal. There is no question that Maiden is a metal band.

33. Wasted Years
Edited on Sat Jul-31-04 08:54 AM by Sven77
It all started out with hearing the first song I ever liked on the Radio when I was a young teenager. Wasted Years was the best song and video. My favorite Maiden CD is Seventh Son, but I love them all upto that CD. Bruce had some good songs on Tattooed Millionare like Born in '58. I even have a couple VHS tapes and seen them in concert few times. I can remember my grandma wallking into my room and seeing all the Maiden posters and saying how aweful, how can you sleep in here. The best was a Somewhere In Time Door Poster.

Derek Riggs was a amazing artist.
