Anybody using voice over IP phone service?

Our phone bill is outrageous. I'm seeing ads for Voice over IP that include unlimted local and domestic long distance for under $30. (Here's one: http://www.vonage.com/)

Is anybody using such a service and what can you tell me about the quality and reliability.

I use Road Runner for internet connection, can I be online and use an IP phone at the same time?

I'm looking for a permanent preplacement of my regular phone service, not a microphone through the computer type of arrangement.

2. A friend of mine tried signing up for one...

...and after weeks of asking them when they were coming to install, they went bankrupt.

It wasn't Vonage, but I will ask him who it was when I see him in an hour or so.

I am looking at his solution too. I have two local lines with no LD that are costing me $25/month total. I would love to replace it with something where I had LD as well.
