First, I went to church, and the sermon was about resisting evil--evil defined as racism, violence, sexism, and homophobia. My eyebrows went up when the priest criticized spending billions of dollars a month in Iraq ("after we set up Saddam Hussein and armed him") when the churches are seeing more and more desperate people coming to their free meal programs or asking for referrals to shelters. He also made an interesting point, that prejudices--racism, sexism, and homophobia--were really "me-ism," the belief that "everyone should be like me." Nobody in the congregation went into freeper mode or got up and stormed out.
After that refreshing bit of sermonizing and the rest of the service, it was time to audition for the choir. This church has three choirs, and there's one that's definitely first-string--it gets to sing the most often, and does special programs throughout the year.
I'd been singing in the summer "pick-up" choir for the past three weeks, so this was the end if I didn't make the audition.
Well, I made it! I've always wanted to be part of a really high-quality, active choir, and now I'm in as a second soprano. Rehearsals start Wednesday, and from there on it's three Sunday morning services, one or two evensongs, and perhaps a special event every month, except in December, which has Christmas Eve and Christmas Day services, as well as two perfomrances of Lessons and Carols.
The rest of the day included finding a gourmet Chinese-Mexican restaurant that features a mariachi brunch, and learning that there is a supermarket just around the corner, which meant that I could do my Labor Day shopping on the same trip.
Came home, and found out that the job I had thought would take all afternoon was actually much easier, so I finished in time to watch one of those classic movies that I have somehow missed up till now, The Bridge on the River Kwai.
I've even had time to add a few more days to Movies for Democrats (see the Meeting Room).
Oh, and did I mention that the weather was lovely?
All in all, making that audition was the centerpiece of a very good day.
