Elton John is not American, Harley or Rock & Roll
Subject is a Great quote from the article. Harley Davidson had their 100th reunion birthday bash last night, and they kept the musical acts secret. 150,000 people, the rumored acts: US, The Rolling Stones, Maybe the Eagles. So like all these people waiting and wondering and guessing and partying and then the party starts and the headlining acts are:

The Doobie Brothers!
Tim McGraw!
Kid Rock!
Elton John!

WOW! I've been fooled all this time.

Must find new music label for "Crocodile Rock" "Saturday Night's Alright For Fightin'" and others... :eyes:

6. Sorry, Sir Elton is NOT Rock & Roll
and one or two songs does not qualify.

I've seen him 3 times live, he is fantastic. BUT. He's not Rock & Roll, he's pop. Very good pop, but pop nonetheless.

7. "POP" merely means "popular."
Edited on Mon Sep-01-03 09:16 AM by wyldwolf
Which is why the pop music charts play rock music that is popular.

I've seen Elton twice myself - In the 70s.

Crocodile Rock
Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting
Benny and the Jets
Honkey Cat
The Bitch Is Back

Elton is indeed rock. Just like poster #2 said below:

Elton John's music is part of the landscape of pop & rock music of America.

But I guess he's gonna have to be thrown out of the rock & roll hall of fame (he was inducted in 1994) and all the classic rock stations in the country will have to remove him from their station because YOU have declared he isn't Rock & roll! :eyes:

2. Elton John's music is part of the landscape of pop & rock music
of America. His contemporaries are indeed the likes of the stones and the eagles and the Who, especially considering his contribution to Tommy. His biggest string of hits came in the mid 70's as the hippy days were waning and transmogriphying into the heavy metal of the 80's.

mcgraw and kid rock are the questionable ones, that's for sure.

3. I love Elton, but BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
I know Harley. Harley is a friend of mine. And Elton is no Harley.

Sounds to me like some corporate head is out of touch with their customers.

5. Elton John!!!?
That line up is terrible!
They at least could have had Steppenwolf:
The Pusher, Magic Carpet Ride, Don't Step on the Grass Sam,
Sookie Sookie, Hootchie Kootchie Man, and - of course - Born to be Wild. That would have rocked the house!

8. Elton John makes better fake rockandroll than, say, Billy Joel...
but he is not a rockandroller. As is the case with Joel, John is a consummate pop craftsman.

9. Somehow, I don't think the Stones would have been a good choice....
...The last time the Stones played a gig with a bunch of bikers,(Altamont) things got really ugly :evilfrown:

And whatever you want to label the music that Elton John made with his original band in the early 70's, it was damn good. But not the kind of music I would normally associate with Harleys.

Then again, look at some of the songs that made it onto this album....

Whitesnake?
Poison??

I'll take "Take Me To The Pilot" or "Levon" over that shit any day of the week
