A most appropriate song for the times, the Nickel Song.

Well, you know that I'm not a gambler
But I'm bein' gambled on
They put in a nickel and I sing a little song
Da-dn da, da-dn da, da-dn da da da
Dn-da-dn, da da-dn, da da da
They put in a nickel and I sing a little song

Well I don't mind that they're lucky
But it seems like they always win
And gambling is illegal in the state of mind I'm in
And if I had a nickel for each time that I've been put on,
I would be their nickel man
And I'd sing a nickel song

They're only puttin' in a nickel
And they want a dollar song, oh
They're only puttin' in a nickel
And they want a dollar song

Well, I don't know so many things
But I know what's been goin' on
We're only puttin' in a little
To get rid of a lot that's wrong
And if we had a nickel
For each time that we've been put on
We'd all be their nickel man
And we'd sing a nickel song

You know they're only puttin' in a nickel
And they want a dollar song, oh
They're only puttin' in a nickel
And they want a dollar song

Well you know that I'm not a gambler
But I'm bein' gambled on
They put in a nickel and I sing a little song
Da-dn da, da-dn da, da-dn da da-dn da da da
Da-da-dn, da da da, da da da

1. Melanie Safka.
Great song. Excellent sentiment. Not a gambler either. Only a gamboler.

2. So raise your candles high
if you don't we could stay black against the night
So raise them higher again, if you do we could stay dry against the rain.

(still brings me to tears)

3. many of those songs echo in my head now and then.
Another one is After the Gold Rush by Neal Young

"Well I dreamed I saw the knights in armour coming

Saying something about a queen

There were peasants singing and

drummers drumming

And the archer split the tree

There was a fanfare blowing

to the sun

That was floating on the breeze"

"Look at Mother Nature on the run

in the nineteen seventies"

"I was lying in a burned out basement

with the full moon in my eyes

I was hoping for replacement

When the sun burst thru the sky

There was a band playing in my head

and I felt like getting high

I was thinking about what a

friend had said

I was hoping it was a lie" +

"Well I dreamed I saw the silver

space ships flying

In the yellow haze of the sun

There were children crying

and colors flying

All around the chosen ones

All in a dream, all in a dream

The loading had begun

All in a dream, all in a dream

The loading had begun

They were flying Mother Nature's

silver seed to a new home in the sun"

4. One more that could be on point.
Waist Deep In The Big Muddy

It was back in nineteen forty-two,
I was part of a good platoon.
We were on manoeuvers in Louisiana,
One night by the light of the moon.
The captain said, "We've got to ford the river",
That's where it all began.
We were knee deep in the Big Muddy,
And the damn fool kept yelling to push on.

The Sergeant said, "Sir, are you sure,
This is the way back to the base?"
"Sergeant, I once crossed this river
Not a mile above this place.
It'll be a little soggy but we'll keep slogging.
We'll soon be on dry ground."
We were waist deep in the Big Muddy
And the damn fool kept yelling to push on.

"Captain, sir, with all this gear
No man'll be able to swim."
"Sergeant, don't be a Nervous Nellie,"
The Captain said to him.
"All we need is a little determination;
Follow me, I'll lead on."
We were neck deep in the Big Muddy
And the damn fool kept yelling to push on.

All of a sudden, the moon clouded over,
All we heard was a gurgling cry.
A second later, the captain's helmet
Was all that floated by.
The Sergeant said, "Turn around men!
I'm in charge from now on."
And we just made it out of the Big Muddy
With the captain dead and gone.

We stripped and dived and found his body
Stuck in the old quicksand.
I guess he didn't know that the water was deeper
Than the place where he'd once been.
For another stream had joined the Muddy
A half mile from where we'd gone.
We were lucky to get out of the Big Muddy
When the damn fool kept yelling to push on.

Well, you might not want to draw conclusions
I'll leave that to yourself
Maybe you're still walking, maybe you're still talking
Maybe you've still got your health.
But every time I hear the news
That old feeling comes back on;
We're waist deep in the Big Muddy
And the damn fools kept yelling to push on.

Knee deep in the Big Muddy
And the damn fools keep yelling to push on
Waist deep in the Big Muddy
And the damn fools keep yelling to push on
Waist deep! Neck deep! we'll be drowning before too long
We're neck deep in the Big Muddy
And the damn fools keep yelling to push on
