I'm depressed, bummed out ...ask me anything while I
piss and moan...

I hate my job! I hate my job! I hate my job! and I was just turned down for another job for wanting too much money... :P

I work as a drafter/graphic designer. Two years ago the engineering department was moved to St. Louis, since then my drafting and graphic duties slowly been cut. All I'm doing now is playing with paperwork and quality control bullshit.

I've been sending out resumes in answer to ads and "cold call" resumes, but no one in the freaking area is hiring and those that are doing some hiring only want to pay slightly better than minimum wage.

I know there are alot of people out there unemployed that would kill for a job and would tell me to quit bitching because I do have a job.
Yes, I'm thankful that I do have a job, but it doesn't make me like it any better....

arrrrrrggggghhhhhhh!

2. I know how you feel
I've had many a job I hated and whenever they cut out the good stuff was able to move on (that was during the Clinton economy). I'm content now and that's enough in this economy.

Just don't give up. Maybe you should get someone to give you a second opinion on your resume. It really helps to get another opinion. It's difficult to give the best assessment of yourself. Concentrate on the kind of job you would like and tailor your resume for it. Emphasis should be placed on what projects you have done and how you accomplished results for your company.

3. I know how you feel!
I'm not enamored with my job, but hell, it's a job, and I'm glad to have one in this Bushconomy. I have thought of relocating, but who the hell is hiring? :P

So, you have my sympathies - the most positive way to take your current situation is that the right job hasn't come along yet. :-)

5. Are you in a position where you could do something different?
I hated my job to. I don't have a college education, so that made my choices limited as to where I could go and what I could do. I just recently went to a casual position at my job (I work Saturdays only) and I'll be returning to college to get my degree. My folks are helping me out a lot by letting me stay at their place through all this. Is it possible that a career change may be right for you?

7. thought about going back to school
and would love to do it but can't afford it, still paying school loans from the previous career change

worked in social services for many years, went back to school for computer programming and then back to school again for CAD drafting.... I'm 48 years old, so unless there is a 100% guarantee of a good paying job after school this is not at option at this time

Quickest way would be to go to school fulltime...but then how do I continue to pay my bills? Can't unless I take a burger-nuke job at minimum wage and that's not enough money. Part-time school, night courses? Sounds good, except that the schools here don't offer all the courses needed to graduate at night. Then there's still the problem of how do I pay for the courses - current employer doesn't offer full or partial reimbursement for education, so that means MORE LOANS - IF I even qualify by going part-time or nights...

12. Have you looked into the possibility of grants or scholarship money?
My mom went back to school at age 48 to finish her bachelor's degree and earn a master's in social work. She managed to get a fair amount paid for; but she did attend full-time. It's possible that there's money available for people like you.

If going back to school is really what you want, why don't you talk with a financial aid counselor at the college you're interested in attending.

If not, maybe you should consider branching off and doing freelance work in graphic design.

17. visit with the in-laws went well
for the most part. Sunday dinner turned into a spate over politics, seems that my partner's brother is a repug and has been indoctrinted by limbaugh because he was reciting the "dittoism creed"

I jumped on his case and challenged all his statements, he just sputtered with more dittoisms. After a few minutes it became clear to everyone at the table he didn't know what he was talking about.

Especially when he said that Clinton had nothing to do with the "economic boom", that it was a result of the repugs. So I asked him that if the repugs were to be credited for the boom, and repugs are now in control of the White House and Congress and if Clinton had nothing to do with the economy then how can he blame Clinton for the downturn/recession? Seems the repugs want the credit but don't want responsibility.

Then he came out with the repugs have family values. I nodded and replied, "they may have family values but they don't value the family" - I started listing all the programs that benefit families that have had their budgets cut by repugs/whistleass. Emphasizing the cuts to college grants, of which his oldest daughter would need this fall. And how his local property taxes are going up to pay for the no-child left behind because the whisteass won't release the money that was promised. more sputtering

15. You Could Live In Central Indiana
I went through there yesterday and I counted no less that 6 stations spewing the "Best" of Limpwad...no NPR talk radio.

I may be depressed but thank God I'm sane!

16. I hate my job too
I think that it is easy to get depressed about something that you spend most of your waking hours doing. I have a friend who said that the secret of not getting depressed because of your job is to not let it define you in any way. You just go there to get paid. That's the way to think about it. I still haven't had much success adapting this attitude. It is frustrating though when you hate your job and cannot leave because you would be unable to get a job to maintain your lifestyle.
