I just said "Heil Bush" in homeroom!

The morning announcements told all homeroom teachers to say the pledge of allegiance. Since my HR teacher is a liberal like me  and doesn't care about the Pledge, I siad the following:

"Heil George Walker Bush, Fuhrer of the Fourth Reich." (with apologies to redeye)

The entire newspaper homeroom loved it. Needless to say, we didn't say the pledge.

2. LOL!
Good for you! I'm glad you didn't get in trouble. I like that kind of civil disobedience. I think we need more of it, if we're going to raise awareness about der fuhrer's REAL agenda, instead of this 'man of god' crap.

5. Great!
You little subversive, you!

Here are some others to keep the class on its toes:

" I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republicans for which it stands, one nation, under George W. Bush, gays invisible, with liberty and justice for all straight people."

"I pledge allegiance to and wrap myself in the flag of the United States Against Anything Un-American and to the Republicans for which it stands, two nations, under Jesus, rich against poor, with curtailed liberty and justice for all except blacks, homosexuals, women who want abortions."

"I pledge obedience to the flag of a desecrated America, and to multinationals who let us stand, one nation of underdogs, who are exploitable, with liberty and justice for sale."

" I Pledge to the Stock Of the United Corporations of America And to the Profit Margin for which it stands, One Fraternity, Under Greed, Invisible, With Liberty and Justice for sale."

"I sell my conscience to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republicans for which it stands, one nation, under Bush, unintelligible, with handguns and oil for all."

"I Pledge Allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republicans for which it stands, one Nation under Corporate Control, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all those who can afford it."

12. More pledges
"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the Fascist State of America. And to the banana republic for which it stands, One mess under Satan, invisible, with liberty and justice for all--except, of course, the poor, workers, women, blacks, Latinos, people with disabilities, etc."

"I sell my soul to the flag of the New Confederate States of America, and to the Republicans for which it stands, one nation of bullies, under Bush (whom God died and left in charge), with liberty and justice for all--in our dreams!"

8. UNAMERICAN
HOW DARE YOU NOT PLEDGE YOUR ALLEGIANCE TO A PIECE OF CLOTH (OR NYLON DEPENDING ON YOUR SCHOOL DISTRICT)?!?!?

It is degenerates like YOU that make all Real Americans want to beat you senseless like it says in the Constitution (somewhere in there)....

Also I would say you are encroaching on all Americans' RIGHT TO BELIEVE IN GOD by not saying the pledge to him who loves us all UNCONDITIONALLY...AND FOR THIS REASON HE WILL PUNISH YOU BY MAKING YOU EAT HOT COALS IN HELL FOR EVER AND EVER....

This country was founded by everyone having the right to free speech and the right to make every child believe in God, the Flag and the sanctity of the PRESIDENT....You sir, are a disgrace to people who want to have freedom from not being able to be forced to do what the government wants (I think).

That is all.

9. Awesome! It reminds me of something my cousin
and a bunch of his classmates did several years ago. They trampled the Christmas tree in their high school office - not because they had anything against Christmas or Christians - but because they supported separation of church & state!

10. I think that's going a little far don't you think?
I mean one thing is to remove the 10 commandments monument or object to having crosses hanging on all the walls but a Christmas tree now-a-days I think has as much or even more of a secular meaning as it does a religious meaning.

In fact, I can see the connection between putting up Christmas Trees during Christmas, which is when it is said Jesus was born. But other than the time of year when they both coincide I don't see (at least off hand) a direct connection between the tree and the religion.

So in short...I think trampling the tree was probabbly not received as a protest for separation of church and state by the school. It was most likely seen as a simple act of vandalism...

just my .02

14. It is still state-sponsored endorsement of a Christian holiday.
They performed their act of civil disobedience in front of the office staff and provided an explanation. I don't know the details of their punishment, or if there was any.

While celebrating the fir tree has pagan roots that predate Christianity, it is almost exclusively associated in this country with the Christian holiday.

If you carry around a jewish star because it looks nice but have little or no idea what it really represents does that mean you are promoting the jewish faith? Of course not.

Same applies for the X-Mas tree. I doubt, if you ask a single person in this country to name a single point in common between a Christmas tree and the actual religious significance of the holiday, they would be able to do so.

To a large degree Christmas in this country has become a secular holiday where commercialism is emphasized more than the religion of it. The simple reason, of course, being that should only Christians decide to participate stores would go out of business.

I think a better example of a Symbol that directly represents religious faith is the Menorah (which is the 7 sticked candleholder typically seen around Chaunukah though they use a 9 stick one during Chaunukah: 8 sticks for the days of Chaunukah and one to light the rest)

Not only is it specifically mentioned in Exodus 25:31-40, but it directly represents the jewish faith since each stick stands for one of the eight days during which the lamp in the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem stayed lit around 164 BC. The story goes that there was only enough oil to light the lamp for one day but the jewish faith says that the lamp in a temple must never go out. They sent someone to get the oil for the lamp and it took them eight days to bring it. During the time (unexplicably supposedly) the light stayed on (attributed to faith and God).

So you see, wouldn't it be better to go around destroying Menorahs that are hanging in government buildings and the like?

but if what you say was entirely true, why on Earth would it be called a "Christmas tree" instead of just a "tree?"

18. lol, come on
My ex inlaws who are Jewish put up a tree.

Take my word for it, the tree is not a religious symbol to Christians. A secular decoration for the season yes.

If I put up my Nativity then you might have a point.

19. Fight! Fight!
You want a flame war, buddy?

:P

I have no objections whatsoever to anyone of any religious faith, or no religious faith at all, choosing to put up a Christian Holiday Symbolic Tree Thingy (TM). I do tend to frown on the erection of such a sectarian religious symbol under state auspices, however. Baby steps towards establishment, in my view, call for the firm stepping-on of the baby toes that take them.

20. The fun part about the Christmas tree is the fact that it once was a
symbol of pagan worship! Martin Luther appropriated it for Christianity. We Christians steal a lot of ideas from the pagans in an effort to make our faith more palatable. When that doesn't work, murder and enforced conversion, of course!

My hat is off to your homeroom. :yourock:
