I'm a real Southerner now. Help!!!
There's a possum in my attic.

How do I get it out (without shooting it, putting the dog up there, etc.)?

1. Live trap?
Hav-a-hart offers live traps for animals of many sizes -- you could stick the trap up there and then dump the possum outside.

4. *snarf* That was my answer, too!
There are pest removal services who specialize in critter expulsion...but I suspect it'll cost ya.

3. Maybe call your local police?
They may have a dog officer or at least some experience with this. If the aminal is endangered, you may have to use one of those "love traps". Do you know how it got in? Maybe it will go out the same way. Good luck!

20. They are since Bushenomics hit!
Trap the possum! Watch him though, he's a fairly dangerous rodent!

6. rat poison ...
It makes them thirsty before they die, so they usually leave and look for water.

Heartless, I know, but you can't just live with a possum. And the little sumbitches will bite the fire out of you if you try to catch 'em.

15. No poison, please, a dead possum smells very bad
and animals tend to crawl into a hidey-hole when they are dying.

19. Absolutely don't try to catch it yourself
Possums are some fierce litte mothers and will tear yo' ass UP!

I'd suggest either poison (but then you'll never know for sure when it's safe to go in the attic), or a varmint removal company. Probably the latter. Unfortuantely, then you won't be able to EAT that sucker.

YOu can possibly lure him into a cage with rabbit food.

9. Not "Help"... It's "Hay-elp"
Well... that's how we learned to say it in South Georgia.

10. Once you get it out
don't forget to make sure you have all entry points blocked. Check under your eaves at the ventillation points and around the foundation. You'll have all kinds of critters if you don't including bats, rats, and squirrels.

11. Go to a feed store and rent a trap
Put a peanut butter sandwich inside the trap and set it near the entrance to the attic. The possum will take the bait and get trapped in the cage. Then you can set him free outside.

Trust me. They used to live under our deck in California. It drove the dog nuts and they ate our peaches and plums.

13. I have caught many with humane live trap, but
bear in mind that a possum eats roaches all night long. I would get him out, and then try to get the hole covered. Does anyone know if they eat electrical insulation?

18. What Allen said: Call Animal Control
However, here's what the Opossum Society (and I'm not making that up) says:
Question: There is an opossum in my attic or under a deck. What do I do?

Answer: Wait for the opossum to leave at night. Sprinkle a layer of flour around the entrance and check for tracks to ensure the opossum has left. Once it leaves, seal the entrance. If you see tracks returning to the hole then do not seal. There is an animal in there. Make sure there are no young left behind before sealing or the animals will die. It is best if you can wait until the non-breeding season (usually October to December) before sealing an area in order to give the young a chance to leave. Remember, if an opossum should become trapped after an area is sealed you will end up with an awful smell and additional expense removing the seal and then re-sealing after the body is removed.
