I'm Recovering From a Tonsilectomy |
|
And I'm ever so much older than 5. Anyone else had this done at an advanced age? I'm in quite a bit of pain -- subsisting for the past 6 days on Slim Fast and Gatorade. Any suggestions? When will the pain subside? Will I ever be able to eat solid food again? Was this to stupidest thing I've ever done in my life? (Really looking like it right now). I'm so over this.

3. Here is hoping that you soon feel better. Get lots of rest. |
|
I still have my tonsils, so I have no advice. I do know if they continue to bleed, that is not a good thing. Take care.

4. I had mine taken out in 2001 when I was 30 |
|
To correct sleep apnea. Apparently my tonsils were the size of golf balls. The specialist who looked in my mouth said that if he were looking at a picture, he would suspect I was dead.
I had it done on a Thursday. I was in a lot of pain when I woke up - so much so I shed a few tears. I called a friend to come pick me up, lying to the nurses that he was going to spend the day with me. If my friend couldn't pick me up, I was going to just forcefully get my clothes and drive myself home. I wanted to get out and go get some medicated lollipops that I was told would deaden the nerve endings. They helped some. So did the milk shake I bought, but sucking on the lollipop first deadened the cold sensing nerve endings so the milk shake felt warm.
I went back to work on Monday for just half a day and then was back on Wednesday, but I couldn't talk, and I subsisted on Flavor-Ice (those plastic tube frozen flavored water things) and soup (took a few days to be able to eat soup) for two weeks. I got it done two weeks before Thanksgiving, and I was recovered by then. I also slept a lot because I didn't feel pain then. So I was very well rested and 15 pounds lighter by the time Turkey Day rolled around. :)
Don't worry, you'll get better.

6. That's why they removed mine |
|
Apparently years of strep infections had enlarged them to the point that they were interfering with breathing.
I never thought about flavorice. That might actually feel pretty good. Ice cream burns when I try to eat it, but popsicles might work. Thanks TlalocW!!! Hey, and 15 pounds? There's always a silver lining, eh?

5. Call your doctor and insist on stronger pain killers |
|
Some doctors seem to have hangups about prescribing the strong stuff (real narcotics). I took 2 or 3 demorals when I had my wisdom teeth out and they were much more effective than tylenol-3.
Hang in there, Jane!

8. had mine removed at age 27-1/2 |
|
... needless to say, I was the oldest in the Ear Nose & Throat hospital that night ... the next morning ... post-op ... all the youngsters were running around, and I was being threatened by the nurse that if I didn't 'talk' I wasn't going to get to go home ...
well ... I caught a glimpse out of the window of the family car approaching the hospital ... so, I made my move quickly ... :)
I had to stay out of work for at least a week.

10. Yes, had mine out last year at the age of 40!! |
|
It will suck for about a month and then you will feel much better!! I had chronic strep and it took a month to get out of my lymph glands. Lost 20 lbs. too.
If you got good pain meds TAKE THEM! Get a refill if you need it too. I was given something so powerful I called it "heroin syrup." I don't even remember what it's called.
I could only stand the sweet-foods (Jello, popsicles, etc.) for about 3 days and I craved something more substantial. That was hard, finding filling food that didn't need chewing and swallowing. Miso soup worked for me, V8 or veggie juice if you like it, I think the Slim Fast is a good idea so you get nutrients as well as sugar.
You WILL feel better soon. :loveya:
