Poll question: Most criminally underrated band?
This one was hard for me to do, because it's much easier to point out overrated bands and albums, like Nirvana and the Beach Boys "Pet Sounds", but underrated bands are a bit trickier.

I thought I'd do it in terms of bands that I think are fucking brilliant, but not that well known by most people, especially people my age.

2. In The Aeroplane Over The Sea is one of my favorite albums
Don't have their first one though. Should I pick it up?

3. Sweet!
Isn't Aeroplane the bomb? I think that album is fantastic. I can't believe the band isn't more popular...everyone I've ever played that album for thinks it's great.

I haven't heard the album of which you speak, but I heard it wasn't nearly as good as Aeroplane.

4. How unhip am I?
Sheesh. How unhip am I? I don't recognize *any* of the bands you've listed or three quarters of the bands your respondents listed...lol.

But, in the interest of trying to puff up my numbers (heh), my choice would be Mike Nesmith.

5. First National Band?
I've been meaning to pick up "Tantamount To Treason" for a long time now, but I'm very wary of buying an album without listening to it first, but Mike Nesmith MP3s are hard to come by.

8. One and the same
Well, I have no idea what direction your mucial taste takes, but I do think Nesmith is one pretty cool musician. There's a big hint of country in his music, but the lyrics themselves are anything but. If you can find an mp3, look for the song, "Rio" as I think it's pretty indicative of his work.

6. I always thought the Gun Club was horrible...
Honestly, a horrible horrible band. So many of my peers and contemporaries absolutely adore that band but I thought they were the worst of what junkie addled rock had to offer. For that musical style I though X smoked the Gun Club for breakfast.

But hey, it's all subjective opinion.

9. They were terrible live (saw them many times) because Jeffreylee
had this crippling stagefright (an odd thing in an ego so large), he would get horribly wrecked, and of course the show would suffer even more. However, I think that the songs that he wrote and the records he recorded (particularly the first three albums) are truly brilliant. His end was tragic and unnecessary. I cast my vote for Gun Club, despite the other very worthy contenders on this list.

10. The Fall
Considering simultaneously quantity, quality, obscurity -- The Fall is impossible to beat as an underrated band.

15. Poison the Well.
Opposite of December is one of the greatest metalcore albums of all time.

Even if their new stuff is a tad weak, they still rock out. :)

16. The Smiths . . . doing well in San Diego
On a recent two day trip to San Diego, I heard THe Smiths:

on two different radio stations

at two different bars (the Princess of Wales played a whole album)

and

at a clothing store.

Great to hear, but too popular a band to be "criminally" underrated.
