4. Nah
It's weird though, at the time, they were'nt aware of it, and a few months later my mom was in incredible pain, so they rushed her to the ER. She ended up having surgery to remove it, and she was supposed to be sterile after that. In 1982, she got pregnant with my brother, and they wrote it up in the New England Journal of Medicine because there was supposedly no way she could have him. kooky, eh?

29. Ok
I had a psycho live-in boyfriend who developed a penchant for firearms. So, one morning when we were living with my parents, I woke up and turned on the tv. He was one of those people who has issues with being woken up, so he shot up in a rage (told you he was psycho) and pulled out his loaded .38 and points it at the tv.

Knowing he was the impulsive type who would actually do such a thing, and not wanting to get a tv screen imbedded in my face and/or go deaf, I instinctively lunged at him and grabbed the barrel, pointing it away from the tv and us. I'm 5'2 and 105 lbs., he's 6'0 and 210...he knew I was'nt letting go, so he dropped it and I told him to go take a walk before I did something I'd regret and/or go to prison for.

Needless to say, we are no longer together.

I'm definitely more anti-social face-to-face... As far as the open relationship thing goes, it's a mellow thing, I've been in love with my fiancee since I was 14, so he knows I'm not going anywhere!

And yes, deep, dark water scares the crap outta me!

you'd have no idea how hard it is when you first start out, but once you get the hang of it, it's one of the funnest things ever.

And i'm assuming you're getting the PS2 version of it...you'll see Max 300 on it. It's the fastest song in that version, 300 beats a minute. So, it's quite a feat to pull a really good grade for it, on any difficulty...:scared:

Another note on that sneeze, it's always a whopper, too. Sets off richter scales on good days. I can't explain it. I also sneeze when coming from indoors into bright sunlight.

196. I am a sun-sneezer too
http://www.madsci.org/posts/archives/aug97/865380242.Me.r.html
1) Do people really sneeze when they look at the sun? This is an important question! There a lot of things that people say they do that they don’t really do. I personally do not sneeze when I look at the sun, and for a long time I thought this was a myth. But I am guessing that you are a sun-sneezer from your question. It seems that some people really do sneeze when they look at the sun, or actually at any bright light (there is nothing special about the sun). This has been recognized in medical journals for at least 40 years, and is called different things, including the "photic sneeze reflex" and even the "ACHOO syndrome". In a few instances the reflex has been documented by shining bright lights at people to make them sneeze, so it probably really does happen.

The thing is, the sun does not make most people sneeze. The best estimates are that only about 25% of people (i.e. 1 in 4) are sun-sneezers, and even sun-sneezers don’t do it most of the time. Other studies suggest that sun-sneezers might have inherited the trait in a dominant fashion from their parents (which means that if only one parent was a sneezer, they would pass the trait on to half of their kids). The problem with these estimates is that they generally rely on asking people if they sun-sneeze, and if their parents do. This is VERY unreliable. People who sun-sneeze tend to assume everyone does, and people who don’t sun-sneeze have often never even considered the possibility!!

25. Supernova - Round #2
10. I never went to my High School prom. I somewhat reget it now. It might have been nice.

9. I genuinely enjoy live theatre, weather it's in the audience or participating on a crew. There's nothing else like it. Ever. The emotional immediacy is addicting.

8. I struggle daily to become as honest a writer as Hunter S Thompson

7. I wonder if I'll ever find someone else to share my life with. I'm mostly too shy to socialize.

6. I have a collection of old MAD paperbacks from the 50s and 60s. I can't believe how wickedly funny they are ... still.

5. I really enjoy flea markets, auctions and old things in general. NOt for the monetary value, but for the stories I get to hear.

4. Between the two of us, my older sister looks to most like our mother. I look like my Dad's side of the family.

3. I really love the art of Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiller, and other Viennese artists around the turn of the 20th Century. I could spend countless happy hours in any museum.

2. I have an inescapable Johnny Depp fascination at the moment. LOL!

1. I have no idea where life will take me next.

on that business of finding someone just because you're shy. I know a couple of people so shy it almost qualified as a handicap, and both of them (independently) have managed to find some pretty good life companions.

11. I have acted in an acting troupe for 5 years and recently realized how much I miss acting.

but I treasure her. I'm even thinking of having her restuffed because she's starting to get very flat -- I'm just worried that she is in too fragile a state to have the work done on her without damage.

I got her in 1964 and to this day I still see that doll in stores! I can't believe they have been selliing her for all those years!

54. Okay, can I still play?
Mine:

1. I don't wear a watch.

2. I keep the clock in my car set 9 minutes fast. For some reason I think that keeps me from being late for things (I don't wear a watch, you know).

3. I saw a UFO when I was about 14. Not an alien spaceship, just a UFO.

4. I saw a satellite burn up on re-entry when I was about 5 or 6 -- one of my earliest memories. Interestingly, I work for a NASA contractor now.

5. My two front teeth were knocked almost out when I was 7, and had to be stitched back in place.

6. I still have my Hot Wheel cars from when I was a kid.

7. I still don't know what I want to do when I grow up. :)

8. I have a fear of rollercoasters, but love riding them. Go figure.

9. I'm apparently mildly allergic to everything except wheat (at least according to the allergy test I had done a long time ago), but I'm VERY allergic to dust. That's why I hate cleaning my house. The other allergies I can deal with (pollen, pets, milk, eggs, and so on).

10. My fantasy is to form a garage band that develops a small cult following. I think I need to practice my music first, though...

69. I always felt constrained by a timepiece
On top of that, I had a bad habit of inadvertantly breaking my wristwatches -- if I wore a watch, I'd somehow bump against a wall and crack the crystal. Never anything violent, I'd just look down and realize is was broken. I switched to a pocket watch for a couple of years, and STILL broke them! At that point I decided "Screw it. No more watches."

I used to have a wall clock in my living room with a dead battery. The time was stuck at 10 minutes past 10. I decided I liked that time because it was too late to start a new task for the night, and too early to go to sleep, so I could read a magazine or listen to music or whatever. I never replaced the battery. Unfortunately, one of the hands finally fell off on its own, so I had to replace it with a clock that works.

Hmmm...looking at the clock, it's past my bedtime....

7. I once had my best friend's mother try to tell him he wasn't popular in high school because he was friends with me, and that I was probably gay. I still don't know where that came from, maybe its because I like cats.

6. I'm a big cartoon fan, and I even have all of the Censored 11 cartoons burned to a CD-R.

5. My path to liberal enlightenment started when my father got laid off from the steel mill he worked for 36 years, and only got $200 a month for a pension because the owner raided the fund and ran.

10) In high school I had nachos and cheese almost every single day for lunch. I rarely liked any of the other choices my school offered. My sophomore year the school started to serve smilk instead of milk so from then on I had lemonade everyday.

7) I’ve never cried during a movie.
6) I’ve dated two guys that have been guests on talk shows.
5) Friends have claimed to have conversations with me while I was asleep but I always woke up not remembering a thing.
4) I’m not sure why but I’ve wanted to study sign language for years. My college only offered it to linguistics majors and haven’t been able to take a class since I graduated.

2) I have a few birth marks, the biggest being on the right side of my lower back.

2) I can crack most combination safes with a good stethoscope (or just my ears) in about 20 minutes.

3) My first published paper in paleontology is a disaster that was published without peer review or my knowledge (even though peer review was promised) and will probably be retracted.

4) I sliced the end of my finger off with a deli meat slicer (it grew back :-) ).

5) I had once wanted to be a naval archetect designing cruise ships.

6) I can identify counterfeit cash in all currencies.

7) I grow my hair out every couple of years thinking, "Oh, I remember when my hair was long and how hot I looked," and then when it's long it becomes an unmanageable frizz-mess that I want to cut off myself.

8) If I were running for president and won every state that I've ever visited I would win in a landslide of 326 electoral votes :-)

9) I have never left North America, but I've travelled in most of its countries.

78. Ten of mine
Ten of mine

10. I like pizza with black olives, onions, jalapenos, and extra cheese.

9. When I was 18, I doctored the birth date on my driver license to look like I was 23, so I could go drinking. I always walked to bars until I was actually 21. Often, I fell in someone's shrubbery on the walk home.

8. I only voted Republican for President in 1968; for Nixon in a mock election at my high school, before I was 18, so it never counted.

7. I have a recurring dream since adolescence that I am driving a car up a very steep hill and it flips over backwards. Then I wake up.

6. I can’t swim a lick.

5. I cried before I was born. Or so I am told.

4. Best dog I ever had was named Gus.

3. I think the worst fucking movie ever was Rocky. Casablanca will always be the best.

2. I owned, at different times, two Ford Pintos, a sedan and a station wagon. They were both blue. I never had sex in the back of the sedan.

1. I think anyone who does not see John Hiatt sing, live and in concert, before they die, has thrown away their life.

"So come on, baby, Drive South, with the one you love !"

My parents lived through the coup of '67. They were scared shitless. My dad worked on top of that there mountain and was involved in a car wreck in the snow. When he reported it to the main base (down at sea level), the SP thought he was smoking something funny when he mentioned snow. :D

I would have been there for the coup, but I wasn't hatched until '68. :-)

That was quite a year for us, after going through the coup, we moved to Saudia Arabia and had to go through the six day war. What a hectic couple of months that was, I still haven't gotten over it. ;)

111. Seph's not too hard
(Well, not according to Cloud, but that's not how I meant!)

Seriously though, if you've bred a Gold Chocobo and gotten the Knights of the Round materia, he goes down in about two or three hits (ack! not like that! *slaps self*). If not, make sure you've gotten Cloud's Ultimate Weapon and level 4 limit break at least (the former from Ultimate Weapon, the latter from the Battle Arena in the Gold Saucer). That helps a lot. Also, get Yuffie's Ultimate Weapon from the Sunken Gelnika, and use her--the Oritsuru (sp?) calculates damage by checking Yuffie's stats against the enemy's. If the enemy's stronger, she hits harder with it. Against Seraph-Sephiroth she should probably do max damage. Casting Big Guard is a *huge* help; it's an enemy skill you can learn if you manipulate the Beach Plugs that hang out around Costa Del Sol. It does Haste, Barrier and MBarrier on the whole party. If you are low on levels or HP it is about the only way you can possibly survive Seph's Supernova (Barrier halves damage). Basically, what you want to do is slap him around quickly, before he can do Supernova. That spell will seriously fuck you up if you're not careful.

And, if all else fails, hang out by that section of the North Cave that's right before the glowy green rocks (the last point you can use your save crystal before fighting Jenova). The Magic Pots there are very generous with XP and AP, and it's the best place in the game to level up characters and materia. If you come prepared it is not very hard.

114. There's lots of us author wannabes
I've noticed lately, LOL. I hear the "when I have time" bit...I have a folder full of ideas and half-finished stories on my hard drive. :)

I'm not familiar with George RR Martin (I will have to check him out!), but my some of my favorites are David & Leigh Eddings, Lloyd Alexander (who introduced me to fantasy books with his excellent Prydain Chronicles), Terry Pratchett, and the aforementioned Octavia E. Butler. I'm also a rather recent convert to R.A. Salvatore. I'm a lifelong D&D player and Forgotten Realms fan but I always avoided D&D-based novels because they always seemed so lousy. However, I recently read Salvatore's Dark Elf Trilogy on the recommendation of a friend, and I instantly fell in love with the character of Drizzt Do'Urden. I've since gobbled up all the other books featuring him. :)

The Eddings are probably my favorite overall fantasy/sf authors though. I love the way they gleefully skewer many of the sacred cows of the genre. I loved their Belgariad/Malloreon series but as time passes I find myself loving the Sparhawk books more. I love that foul tempered old knight. :)

116. Eerie!
We have many similarities. Lloyd Alexander's "Book of Three" was what introduced me to the fantasy genre. I always had such a crush on Eilonwy, complete wench that she was at times. :-)

I am still a gamer, although I haven't played D&D in ages. I ran several PBEM games that were more like collaborative fiction with the game mechanics serving as a common frame of reference for interaction, than a traditional RPG.

Salvatore is a decent writer, and his characters are pretty interesting. The dialects start to bother me, though, at times.

Eddings was one of my faves a long time ago, but I got a little tired of him after reading the second series, which seemed a complete rehash of the first. Even the Sparhawk series seemed quite derivative.

I also recommend anything and everything by Guy Gavriel Kay and Stephen Brust. Glen Cook's Black Company series is good, gritty fantasy that is reminiscent of Vietnam more than anything.

I do not recommend Robert Jordan and his massive Wheel of Time series (still ongoing), who has gone majorly downhill in recent years.

Oh, and Robin Hobb is excellent. Her Assassin and Fool series are fantastic. Haven't read her Liveship Traders series yet, but I hear that's solid as well.

126. Cackle
I had a ten year old girl crush on Taran, as dumb as he was, so I guess we're about even. :)

I agree with you about Salvatore's dialects. Dialects period annoy me, I hate that horrible faux Scottish brogue dwarves seem to get stuck with (Catti-brie, I'm looking at YOU.). The only ones that never got on my nerves were Eddings' because they were so freaking hilarious--the Karandese bumpkin and Beldin's outrageous accent (used solely to piss off Belgarath at that :P) are favorites. I understand where you're coming from with him, because I think his stuff is very formulaic too. The reason I keep going back to him is mostly because of the characters and dialogue. I tend to dislike "high olde fantasie" and authors that take themselves way too seriously. In spite of this I respect Papa Tolkien because he was a pioneer, and also because I think he's one of the few that ever did elves any justice (and I'm a big elf fan).

Ugh, Robert Jordan. I have a dusty paperback copy of Eye of the World sitting on my bookshelf. Every New Years I make a resolution to read it all the way through. I always stop somewhere around page five. Ye gods, what a windbag that man is. I will never understand his appeal. My grandkids will probably be in line for a new Wheel of Time book. Paging Mr. Jordan: you are not Tolkien. I'm sorry, you're not. And you need an editor, badly. He's starting to fall victim to Anne Rice Syndrome (and this is coming from a big Rice fan).

I'm glad you reminded me of the Black Company, that's one of the many series that people have recommended to me and I just never got the chance to read.

Sheesh, you're making me have to schedule a trip to the library. :)

Edited on Thu Sep-04-03 03:22 AM by SoCalDem
We took them up in the level pay plan, and during the winter when the elec is lower I just pay extra, and when summer rolls around, no matter how much it actually is, I only have to pay the level pay amount..

Some years, I even get a refund check from the when the settlement date rolls around.. I usually try to pay them a couple of hundred every month, even if the bill is only $75.00.. We do the same with the gas company..

I sure wish the damned things were lower, but hey.. I don't like walking around all sweaty and icky, so we pay..:)

Have not been to Tahoe but want to check it out. Only electric here (no gas - cause of the mountains). This place had wood stoves I recently replaced with these "Toro" stoves - was getting tired of having to haul all that heavy ass wood in. I just switched over to that plan on the electric in January - has made it lots easier this summer !

129. People who don't like animals are scary aren't they ?

These guys (cats and dogs) all, except one, just wandered in or found them abandoned under the bridge at the river behind my house (sadly a lot of people dump them off there) After getting them spayed I just add another bed and they fit in in no time. Never had kids so it was my dream to live on a big place in the middle of nowhere and be able to keep every stray that came in - took a while but finally got there.
Did the same in the city, with strays, but the neighbors (some not so secretly) wanted me to GO Away .. ha

I am a rescuer too.. People who profess to "hate" animals, always "worry" me a little..I am not too fond of fish, or insects, but the rest of them are ok with me :)

When I was a little kid, I brought a monkey home (we lived in Panama)..It was NOT a monkey :)

My family freaked out.. It was a baby sloth that had fallen from a tree.. It was not hurt, but we had to call the mp's and have them take it to an animal refuge.. Those claws were too much, and it smelled pretty bad too..

132. Bless both of ya'll
I totally agree about people who say that hate animals...it really makes me wonder. I'm with SoCal on insects though. :) Fish are cool though, I dunno why, I just think they're funny. :) When I was very little I used to embarrass the heck out of my mom by making fish faces all the time.

I have nothing but love for rescuers. The boss lady at the Pagan shop I worked out ran a rescue operation out of the store, and we found good homes for many abandoned little ones. It never ceases to amaze me how cruel some people can be to animals, like they are just unfeeling toys or something. I cringed at all the reports of dalmatians being abandoned on roadsides when the 101 Dalmatians movie came out, because the kids that got them due to the movie got bored with them. The novelty wore off, the trend was over, so these poor animals were just left to fend for themselves.

I've heard similar stories about pet owls thanks to the Harry Potter movies. People are such asshats, it's sickening.

123. I'm transluminal

1/ I live in transluminal dimensions you can't even imagine

2/ I think it's funny how you people are imprisoned by time

3/ I don't know why you don't like plutonium pellets - they're delicious.

4/ I was once involved in a science experiment that was supposed to create a minor planet, but accidently started a super nova.

5/ Seventeen thousand billion, seven hundred and ninety five million living creatures were created out of that super nova.

6/ I'm sorry about it, but at least you're still alive.

7/ If I could do it all again, I would, but I'd make it last longer.

8/ I can put my hand inside your stomach and take out your last bite without penetrating your skin or harming you in any way.

9/ The light in this universe smells funny.

10/ I'll still be alive after the Earth falls into the Sun.

Otherwise known as prostate cancer. Detected early by PSA test, treated early (age 47), so far the outcome has been excellent. Means a lifetime of being tracked, but it's a small price, considering the alternative.

Can't recommend the treatment as recreation, though. ;-)

135. No. 10 -- It is 6:30 a.m. and I'm at work right now

No. 9 -- I speak according to the AP stylebook.
No. 8 -- I am more than a foot shorter than my husband.
No. 7 -- We probably have more than 1,500 CDs and records, and I rarely, if ever, listen to any of them.
No. 6 -- I do not have a clinically diagnosed hearing problem, but if you're behind me, walking, and you're trying to talk, I won't hear you. I will hear your shoes.
No. 5 -- I'm 1/8th English, 1/4 Polish, 5/8 Russian. I think. I've cooked Russian and Polish, but not English.
No. 4 -- I'm learning regular HTML. DU uses its own weird HTML. I am attending a meeting today at which I will learn how to use a Web site admin tool, which uses another psuedo-HTML.
No. 3 -- I was a member of the Chemical Youth Discussion Forum on Prodigy in the early 1990s. (If anyone recognizes that, PM me, please.)
No. 2 -- Another DUer is the most prolific visitor to my blog, according to the free stat service I use.
No. 1 -- It's very cold in here right now.

1. I went to 10 different schools K-12th grade (and I have units from 6 different colleges all patched together to get my degrees/credentials).

2. I'm an only person raised by a single mother. No other family. At all. Except for my own 2 sons and grandson.

3. I like animals better than most people.

4. My olfactory nerves were damaged in an accident, and I haven't smelled anything in 2 years.

5. I suffer from motion sickness so severe that I can get seasick standing onshore watching waves.

6. I ran away from home my jr year in highschool; I lived in the back of a pickup truck, cheap motel rooms, and worked cleaning apartments for a semester. I went back in time to take finals and scrape through.

7. I love mountains, rocks, and meadows above all other places.

8. I want to move out of the socal desert in the worst way.

9. While I love gardening, I hate lawns. I hate growing them, I hate mowing and edging them, and I hate the way they're always taking over all of my flower beds etc. I'd rather grow dandelions, wildflowers, wild grasses, etc. than a lawn. If my house hadn't come with bermuda, the grass would be long gone.

157. I have 10 more!
In case you had any doubt about how much of a dork I am, here's 10 more examples.

10. I once met Matthew Perry near a Starbucks in New York City. We bought him his cup of coffee. :wow:

9. I thought the Blair Witch movie was real until I saw the girl who played Heather in another movie. I still will not go camping, however.

8. As a child I loved Stephen King's Children of the Corn. I am now deathly afraid of cornfields. M. Night Shyamalan's Signs did not help matters. :scared:

7. I'm 24 and still afraid of the dark.

6. I drive a Plymouth Breeze. I would rather be driving a VW.

5. I still cry when I watch 13 Days or anything about JFK. we went to the sixth floor museum in Dallas, and I openly wept. There's an atmosphere there, and most people I know get choked up when they visit.

4. I have seen every episode of Friends more times than I can count. :freak:

3. I have seen every episode of ER more times than I care to count.

2. I'm a sucker for animals, especially Cats, Dogs, and elephants.

1. I'm addicted to chapstick. Doesn't matter the brand. But I have to have some on me at all times. Did you know they have little carriers now that will clip to your keys? $3 at walmart. Chapstick included. LOL

158. Geez. What don't you already know?
Edited on Thu Sep-04-03 09:32 AM by SiouxJ
I've already posted most of the interesting things about me over the past year and a half, like that I spent the day with Dr. Seuss when I was 10, I'm an only child since my brother died when we were teens, my great grandfather was the last Tsar of Russia's veterinarian. I think you already know some of the following but in case you weren't paying attention:

1. I have a thing for 70's movies and TV melodramas (like Hawaii 5-0)

2. I used to hang out backstage at a lot of concerts; sometimes I was there legitimately but mostly I snuck back. And no, I wasn't a groupie.

3. I'm a pretty good pool player.

4. When I was a kid I wanted to be either a stand up comedian or an animator for Disney. I was validated when I was voted class clown in my 6th grade class but I hate speaking in front of crowds. I nixed the Disney idea cause I didn't want to live in Hell.A.

5. I was a tomboy growing up and still don't like to wear dresses (I like skirts but not dresses)

6. The only illegal drug I've ever done is pot (which is hard to believe I know, considering #2)

7. I have a "dark" side. I love dreary weather and dark movies and TV shows (a la Twin Peaks)

8. I've worked-out religiously since I was 19.

160. Here's My 10

1) Came damn close to losing my leg (due to my own stupidity) while working in the mill. Another time I almost had my forearm crushed. Steel mills can be a very dangerous place to work.

2) A medical doctor's kindness saved my ass from being drafted during the Vietnam era.

3) Paid most of my way through college (PSU and Pitt) by working in the mill, saving my money and living with my parents. But this was when tuition was <$800 a semester and engineering textbooks cost <$60.

4) Didn't have my first date until I was 27 years old (painfully shy and awkward around girls).

5) I was 34 when I finally lost my virginity.

6) I beat the crap out of my sister years ago after she threatened my father and seriously insulted me.

7) Father died without leaving a will. After my mother passed, she left everything to my sister.

8) I have no contact with my family and and all the happier for it.

9) Been living with the same woman for 14 years but this may be coming to an end in the near future (she wants to move on with her life).

10) I think I wouldn't mind spending the rest of my life alone.

BONUS) After reviewing this list I'm beginning to think that I'm rather fucked up.

194. It wasn't too bad
We'd gotten off the ferry and my parents left me alone with the luggage while they went somewhere to arrange for a hotel room. I was wearing pants that I'd outgrown so they were waaaaaaay too tight.

Some guy wandered up and started talking to me about my pants and started stroking the fabric at my crotch. Eventually I got nervous and pushed him away and he literally disappeared so I guess I lost some time.

I have to admit that sometimes I use my looks to my advantage... and that just makes it all the more satisfying when I open my mouth and leave them stunned and unable to comprehend what the hell just happened to the "empty-headed bundle of giggles" they thought they were speaking to! ;)

in one of these two threads. The response has been amazing. It's been both fun creating the 'lists' and even more fun reading and learning about other DU'ers.

We're an extraordinary group of people, and it's been a pleasure getting to know each of you a bit better.

If there's enough of an interest, I may try this as an exercise again in another month or so.

Thanks again, all of you.

2)I have green eyes.

8)shh, don't tell anyone, but I was born in PA and lived there for 6 weeks before my parents moved back south of the Mason-Dixon line. Technically, this might make me a yankee. :scared: ;-)

9)The only food I really don't like is rutabagas. ewwww

10)When I was a kid, I skipped out of piano lessons so that I could watch Star Trek.
