Looking for feedback on letter to friends and family...
...that I'm sending with Birthday Party invitation.

(Also, if you can get to NYC on Friday October 3rd, and you're a DU member who is known to me, PM me and I'd love to send you an invitation to the party.)

I just want to know if this letter sounds offensive in any way, if it sounds genuine, if you would be compelled to give to one of the causes I've listed, if you think anything important is missing. Do I know the difference between which and that? (I don't think so.) Would you think of giving to more than one or all of the causes I've listed?

(I know, I didn't list DU. I wanted to limit it to 4 and pick things that were both personal and somewhat broad.)

Thanks so much.

Dear Friends and Family,

I'm so happy to have the chance to celebrate my 35th Birthday with you. I feel so lucky to be alive, and I'm excited to use this occasion to wear my wedding dress which I was not able to wear on my wedding day due to my recent accident.

As you know, I've had many opportunities to receive cards and gifts lately. I had an amazing bridal shower, an unforgettably unique wedding, and you were all so generous during my stay in the hospital. I want to have this party because I want to see you all and dance with you and enjoy wearing my dress, and that's all I want or need in the whole world. So, instead of bringing a card or a gift, I hope you will consider making a donation to one of the following important causes.

Thank you all so much for being a part of my life. I am so lucky.

I'll see you on October 3rd.

Love,

René

The Paul Braucher Medical Fund
Virginia and Daniel Braucher 710 73rd Court
Willowbrook, IL, 60527

Paul Braucher is a friend and a fellow Knox College graduate. He is also an amazing artist and musician based here in New York. Recently, Paul was stricken with a rare and brutal head and neck cancer and was given little hope. He traveled to see a talented surgeon in Denver, Colorado who has succeeded with "inoperable" tumors just like Paul's. Paul is currently recovering from the operation which appears to have been successful.

Paul's cancer was discovered after Paul had lost his health insurance. I hope you will consider making a contribution to Paul's medical fund to pay for his operation and lengthy stay in the ICU.

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Community Center
208 West 13th Street
New York, NY 10011

I've been working as an Information and Referral Specialist at the Center for over four years. The Center changed my life. That's what the Center does. It changes people's lives. I'm so blessed to not only be a part of this community, but to have a chance to be a contributor, to be one of the people who helps to make things better. This community has enhanced my life more than I can describe, and has eased my recent suffering and supported my recovery beyond my ability to express gratitude.

The Center Mission Statement:
"The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center provides a home for the birth, nurture and celebration of our organizations, institutions and culture; cares for our individuals and groups in need; educates the public and our community; and empowers our individuals and groups to achieve their fullest potential."

I hope you will consider making a contribution to the Center.

Women At Risk
601 West 168th Street, #7 & #8
New York, NY 10035

For more than two years I've been privileged to work for this important organization. The women with whom I work have been so supportive and inspirational and have taught me so much. It's my honor to invite you to consider supporting Women At Risk.

Women At Risk's mission is to enhance the lives of women who are at high risk for the development of breast cancer and women with breast cancer through research, education and support. WAR was founded in 1991 by a grass roots partnership of physicians and patient/volunteers who recognized that high risk women would benefit most from interventions aimed at early diagnosis, and possibly prevention, of breast cancer. Women At Risk allocates the largest portion of its funding to research projects benefitting both high risk women and women who been diagnosed with breast cancer.

The American Civil Liberties Union
125 Broad Street, 18th Floor
New York, NY 10004

Yes, of course, I am a card-carrying member of the ACLU.

The increasing influence of anti-liberties extremists in Washington and the continuing "war on terrorism" has produced the most challenging climate for basic freedom and liberty in the last 20 years. For more than 80 years, the ACLU has defended our basic rights and freedoms when they were at their most vulnerable and our values as a nation were put to the test. Since September 11, our country has confronted another one of those tests, a test that will determine whether we will protect and safeguard our fundamental liberties or sacrifice them for the illusion of safety.

The ACLU needs your help, especially at this time when so many of our leaders lack the courage to speak out. Please consider making a contribution to this vital organization.

7. well it's
a good album! You should publicize yourself more....

I recommend a good lip-lock with Madonna - that seems to get people's attention.

10. Yeah, I wonder...
...which one/s people will pick. All my Knox friends will pick Paul's fund. I wonder if my Center friends will decide to support Women At Risk and my Women At Risk friends will decide to support the Center.

Hmmm.

6. what a nice letter
I think you did a fine job. There is something there for everyone. It can be difficult when a person only asks for gifts to one cause or one kind of cause but you provide a nice range of choice.

9. You might want to add a "make checks payable to" line for each
especially the LGBTCC, as that's an awful long name to put on a check. Otherwise super.
You'll be dancing in a month? Superer!

14. Well, something like dancing...
...I hope. We'll see. The doctor says it will take a while after the cast comes off before I can really walk...but I have a feeling it won't take as long as he thinks.

That's a good suggestion about "make checks payable to..." especially for The Center.

:loveya:

Thanks!

15. Looks absolutely fine to me!
Edited on Thu Sep-04-03 05:52 PM by Rabrrrrrr
I might say, for the donation line, "So, instead of bringing a card or a gift, if you feel absolutely compelled that you have to give something, I ask instaed that you consider making a donation to one of the following important causes."

And in the thrid one, you have: "and women who been diagnosed" which should include a "have" between "who" and "been".

Wow! This is so like you, RBNYC. I love it!! It's to the point, heartfelt, well-written, compassionate, and devoid of ego. Wonderful! And if I can attend your party... count me in for a breast cancer donation (that's what killed my mother)!

(and thanks for the thank you card - I'm so glad to hear that you are good enough that you can have a party wearing your wedding dress! And like you say, one good thing is, of all the weddings that your friends and family have gone to/been invited to, yours is absolutely one that they will never forget, and will live on in family folklore for GENERATIONS, at a minimum!)

When you come up with something that's RIGHT?
You'll be dancing.
Oh yeah.
You'll be dancing.

22. If I can get there,
you're dancing with your mother even if I have to hold you up!

I had to hold up my father walking down the aisle at my wedding. Your father got to hold your hand as you were wheeled into the ceremony. I'm glad nobody had to hold him up to get there.

Ma

:loveya:

P.S. Didn't you say you lost some weight? I've got a ten-pound load limit unless it comes to someone I love.
