Holy Bat Crap Bat Man! I think ET is calling!
LONDON (Reuters) - An unexplained radio signal from deep space could -- just might be -- contact from an alien civilisation, New Scientist magazine has reported.

The signal, coming from a point between the Pisces and Aries constellations, has been picked up three times by a telescope in Puerto Rico.

1. but the duration is short
what is fascinating is the frequency. The very one which matches the song of hydrogen after the big bang.

Plus it has a strange variation, suggesting artificial stuff, or the source being in a rapidly rotating and orbiting planet.

Yeah, this could be real news.

11. Very simple.
You download the software from http://www.setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu and install it and run it. It prompts you to set up a new account and the downloads a set of data to crunch on.

On Windows and Mac it is installed as a screensaver, and can be set up to only run when your computer is idle.

8. I just read about this
I actually think this is really exciting. It wouldn't be the first false alarm they've had at SETI, but its still really cool. I used to do SETI@home, but I got rid of it when I reformatted my computer and have tried to limit how much software I install on it (windows just seems to do better if you keep things simple ;))

I've heard that with advancements in our ability to detect such signals, if there is anything to find out there, we should find it within the next 20-30 years.

I hope this is the real thing. If this was confirmed, maybe all the media would talk about this, leaving the repub convention and swift boat crap behind.

10. If this is the October Surprise
Then Bush has bit off more than he can chew.

Hmmmm..... alien civilizations have been discovered, should I vote for the creationists fundy Christian, or the sensible guy who likes science and peace?

I think most people will chose peace over an apocolyptic world view....

13. Looks like a false alarm :(
It was reported on the internet that the signal had been found using the Seti@home screensaver that uses computer downtime to analyse sky data from telescopes.

But researchers connected with the project told BBC News Online on Thursday that no contact with extraterrestrials had been made.

"It's all hype and noise," said its chief scientist, Dr Dan Wertheimer. "We have nothing that is unusual. It's all out of proportion."
