5. Yet another 10 things....
1. I like Action-Adventure movies: Jackie Chan, Bruce Willis, Stallone, Van Damme... I love to watch those guys kick bad-guy ass.

2. I like wearing short skirts.

3. I tend to drive too fast. Or fly too low, depends on your perspective.

4. I'm chronically underweight. My bony elbows have been registered as lethal weapons.

5. Stir-fry, my youngest cat, licks my face when he wants to cuddle.

6. I have a "thing" for dark-haired men with beards.

7. My toenails are enameled a glossy, pearlescent pink.

8. My neighbours are a Norwegian boatwright on the one side, and a nudist, inordinately proud of his tiny schlong on the other.

9. I have a dozen bookshelves, all overstuffed with books, and there are more books, stacked in various locations around my apartment.

10. I love the way the air smells in the fall. Decaying leaves, crisp, cold air, smoke and pines. Mmmm.... Tomes have been written about falling in love in the spring, and about summer romance. - But I love the fall, long walks with the trees a riot of colour, the students bursting with freedom and excitement.

And anyway, there's some fella that puts a pretty constant smile on my face already.

6. Thinking, thinking...
I can change the oil and the tires on my car.

I first met my husband 21 years ago in 7th grade, dated him in high school, and dumped him because he was too "nice".

I lost 100 pounds in 6 months (not in a good way, and more than needed to be lost)

I live in a highly republican, christian fundamentalist neighborhood.

I am a licensed cosmetologist. Haven't worked at it in over 5 years. Wasn't my cup of tea.

I have kept a daily journal since back in middle school.

Did I mention my daughter was in the National Spelling Bee Last year? Speller #107? She won us a free trip to D.C. and we had a blast.

I am an avid (AVID) football fan.

I rarely wear dresses and never wear heels.

I love old country music, but abhor the new.

Reading back on this list, man I am boring.

100 pounds in 6 months?! Did you have something amputated?

On edit: No, you're not boring. I think it's like visiting a foreign country in a way. As dull as you find the post office in your home town, visiting one in Paris is cause for wonder.

Even the simplest things about other people seem interesting to me. It's my crap that's boring.

20. For a second I thought I was reading about me...
Well, except for the coffee, dog, and rainforest -- although the rainforest has been tempting at times (getting a dog has been tempting, too, for that matter).

Interesting about the fear of heights, I found that I can stand on a balcony, for instance, as long as there is a VERY secure and thick railing. I can even look over the edge of a cliff as long as I'm laying flat on the ground, on my stomach. Then I can crawl to the edge. Slowly but surely I'm working on that fear -- even hiked around the Grand Canyon a little bit last year! (Just didn't get too close to the edges.)

12. Okay, one more time
Edited on Thu Sep-04-03 08:26 PM by Cheswick
1) I used to think John Malkovich was the sexiest man on earth (I might still)

2)I have size 9 1/2 feet and I have not worn high heels in 10 years. I refuse to be uncomfortable anymore

3)I was in the honors english clas in 9th grade and once we all climbed out the window and came back in through the door while the guy who eventually ended up validictorian distracted the teacher. BTW the teacher never taught again after us. WE WERE HORRIBLE NASTY smart kids.

4)My mother told me when I was a year old, I used to sit for hours in the dusty yard in TX where I was born and call "poggies poggies" and let our puppies climb all over me while I laughed.

5) I was the only child who met my grandmother for the first time with a big grin. She was a very fussy woman who didn't easily relate to us...so this impressed her and she thought I was special for years.

6)About a year ago I discovered that a war memorial (the battle of Wyoming Pa) is inscribed with names of several of my ancesters. I had thought they moved from CT to central NY in the 1700s and stayed. But apparently they ventured to Pa settled this area and my line went back to Morrisville/Madison NY. I had no idea I had connections to this area besides marrying someone from here.

7)I am mentioned/thanked in the 2nd edition of "Fortunate Son".

8)When I was a kid, from the age of four, we would go to my grandarents lake cottage. I always found a way to get into the water almost immediately. I took many 'accidental" falls off the dock the minute we got out of the car.

9)I was an RA in college. One night during a fire drill my boyfriend trailed out of the dorm along with all the girls on my floor...right past the Dean of Students.

10)Another time in college a bunch of us put stockings over our faces(Mine was orange and I was the tallest person there, everyone knew it was me) and "kidnapped" people walking around campus, took them to the cemetary and left them there tied up. Of course we went back and got them.

2) I'm a slob. My boyfriend's neat. Keeps things interesting.

3) I've met Sinbad, Gregory Hines, Herbie Hancock, Peri Gilpin, Eartha Kitt, Mick Ronson, olympian Al Oerter & Billy Idol

4) In highschool and college, I studied French, German, Italian, Arabic, Finnish, Spanish, Portuguese and American Sign Language. Can barely squeak by in Italian if I have to. I've forgotten most of the rest.

5) I have three cats and an African Sulcata Tortoise named Rosebud. She could well grow to 200 pounds. I give daily insulin injections to one of the cats.

6) Just about every inch of wallspace in my house is covered with bookshelves. I have a lot of books. And DVD's.

7) I did a LOT of acid in high school and college.

8) I've gone to 220' underwater while SCUBA diving. Once. It's dangerous to go that deep.

9) I just found out a few years ago that my twin sister almost killed me. She was mad at me cuz I was bein' a jerk and she sprayed a perfume of hers that I was highly allergic to on my pillow. I didn't smell it, and in the middle of the night my parents had to rush me to the hospital. I was in intensive care for days.

10) My newest kitten is sucking on my earlobe as I type this.

35. Well, if SOteric can go twice...!
1. The earliest record of my father's family is from Norway in 1726, when two young people from neighboring islands eloped.

2. Our family used to own a dog who could open doors with his teeth and paws.

3. Maybe I've watched too many episodes of Mystery, but I find men with British accents incredibly attractive.

4. When I was ten years old, I was part of a recorder quartet formed by our church's music director. We had soprano, alto, and tenor recorders, and we doubled all the hymns during the service.

5. I used to be anti-choice. That gradually changed as I learned about other women's experiences and, most significantly, had a pregnancy scare of my own.

6. I wa born on the annivesary of D-Day, and Robert Kennedy died on my eighteenth birthday, having been shot the previous day. A famous person who shares my birthday is Nathan Hale.

7. I have never seen the following incredibly popular movies: Titanic, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Ghostbusters, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, or Saving Private Ryan. And yet I presume to write Movies for Democrats!

8. I didn't get a driver's license until I was 29. Just wasn't interested, and I lived in places where I didn't have to drive.

9. All my gentleman friends, except the very first guy I dated in high school, have been two to ten years younger than me.

10. I am hopelessly bad at 1) wrapping packages, 2) keeping a house or apartment neat, 3) remembering how to play card games from one session to another, 4) any game that involves throwing or hitting a ball or rolling one down an alley, 5) arithmetic--When I was teaching, my students used to double-check my grade calculations, because I was so error-prone.

perhaps you are allergic to MSG. I'd bet if you found a Chinese restaurant with a "no msg" statement on the menu, you might find it's not the food that makes you sick. Most of them used to use MSG which a lot of people are allergic to. Just a thought.

41. Ten again...
10) I've only had three cars in my life, all long-lived: a vintage Mercedes, and two Volvos.

9) During the Civil War, my great-great grandfather (on my father's side) was a private in Company D of the 11th Mississippi Infantry. The 11th was part of Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, and fought in several major engagements, including Gettysburg. My GGG was captured just a few days before Lee surrendered, when his post was overrun by Federals. He was imprisioned and caught smallpox, but survived and migrated to Texas. The daughter he had who links me to him was born *after* the war. In short, had he been killed or died from disease, I would not exist.

8) I occasionally smoke a pipe.

7) I have a gift for mimicry of voices and sounds. This has gotten me into trouble on more than one occasion.

6) Two days ago, I helped Nastassja Kinski put her dog (a pug) into her car.

5) I enjoy the company of cats and vice versa; it's as if I speak their language.

4) I buy many more shoes than I need.

3) I am very attracted to women with dark hair and green eyes.

2) The desert recharges me.

1) I can't seem to get enough water -- I drink more than eight glasses/day, take long showers, and swim regularly.

57. My first ten...
10) I grew up in Switzerland (and returned to the U.S. speaking French better than English).

9) I'm 1/2 Russian (or Belarusian) Jew, 1/4 German (with a brief stay in Poland), 1/8 Danish, and 1/8 Manx (explaining my lack of a tail). This means that I am both a) German and Jewish, b) Russian and Polish, and c) Scandinavian and Celtic. (I persecute myself in my spare time.)

8) I went to college assuming I would eventually become an Episcopal clergyman. That lasted until, roughly, the first time I woke up after an off-campus party not able to remember what I had done the night before...then, later, found out...

7) I once crashed a Columbia Records party in San Francisco, and wound up standing next to both Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel.

6) My first vote ever was for a Republican (Gov. Francis Sargent of Massachusetts, back in the days when there were liberal Republicans). Not too many since then, though.

5) My first girlfriend is now (hypocritical right-wing talk-show jackass) Michael Medved's sister-in-law.

4) I am officially a recording artist, having sung on a CD of Gregorian Chant.

3) On a trip back from Switzerland in 1972, I spent the entire flight playing chess with a girl who I later found out was Henry Kissinger's daughter. (Our parents were talking, and her mother mentioned something about attending the GOP convention, which fortunately caused my mother to restrain herself from making any political comments about "that crook Nixon and his Nazi henchman Kissinger.") Too bad...she was kind of cute.

2) During my freshman year in college, I hitchhiked between Maryland and New Hampshire and back again over a long weekend.

1) I have directed several short films (including Titanic II -- official tagline: "Nothing on earth could prevent a sequel"), and am currently at work on a feature.

63. My turn, my turn
I've been thinking about this trying to come up with 10 things for days now. Here goes.

1. I webhost adult content. Seriously. I’m the webmistress for the Boys in Chains fanfic archive and I own a server that hosts some of the bigger erotic fanfic sites on the web.

2. I have had the same best friend for 20 years this coming January. We met in the 7th grade and have been best friends ever since the second we met.

3. I’m carrying on a torrid internet affair with a fellow DUer (no not short bus)

4. I collect the novelizations of cheesy scifi and fantasy movies. I actually own a hardback copy of “Clash of the Titans”. And Krull. *blushes*

5. My best friend and I collect Star Wars toys. A couple of years ago we got some used ships and did terrible things to them with paint and glitter. We painted a Tie Fighter black with rainbow sparkles and then painted the 6 panels on the wings in the colors of the rainbow. It was hideous and beautiful.

6. I love shoes. With big chunky heels.

7. I wear at least one anklet pretty much all the time (have to take them off to shower). My favorite came from India and has little bells on it that jingle when I walk. It’s like putting a bell on a cat.

8. I was involved for 10 years with the single most boring man on the face of the Earth.

9. My parents moved into the house I grew up in 3 weeks before I was born. They still live there. I think I’m the only person I know who never moved before leaving for college.

10. I was originally a piano pedagogy major. Music was my life. I was so young when I started I don’t even remember learning the names of the notes. My momma says when I was little I didn’t bang on the piano like most babies. I would pick out little tunes one note at a time. The neat thing is my 4 year old nephew does the same thing. :-)

64. 10 things you don't know about Interrobang!
1) I'm adopted, and I was born to splendidly anonymous people in Edmonton, Alberta.

2) I have been published several times in several different forms -- poetry, three stories, two articles, and one song.

3) The man who did the arrangement and recording work to publish my song was killed in a car accident this June, which may prevent that album from ever being finished. My article publications and one of my story acceptances have also resulted in similar calamities.

4) I rode horseback for 20 years, and went national for dressage in my category.

5) There are at least two *obvious* mis-spellings of my name, and several more obscure ones -- and I have fairly common first and last names!

6) Two of my grandparents immigrated from Scotland (cross pair); the other half of the family has been here long enough to have both DAR and UEL members. :)

7) I want to go to Israel, but I don't know why.

8) I never wear skirts unless I'm wearing medieval costume; I never wear shorts (unless the 'physical terrorists' make me), and I don't wear traditional high-heeled shoes (pump or strappy type).

9) I do not own a purse.

10) I own a triangular ring (left hand, index finger), about which my friend the (taciturn) physicist said, "Hmm... Yes... Three arcs *is* the minimum required to pull off that little trick." And that was *all* he said about it. (Otherwise, I have five more rings I wear, two of which exist in a sum total quantity of one each.)

72. I belong to the Society for Creative Anachronism.
It's a social club dedicated to re-creating the better aspects of the Middle Ages (find out http://www.sca.org ). No, I don't do RenFaires (sheesh; I come to play, not to play for the crowd!), but I have been known to "sutler" at 1812-14 War events, where I will also wear skirts.

Part of the reason I don't wear skirts is that I hate my legs. I have Cerebral Palsy (spastic quadriplegia), and my calves are atrophied and my thighs are hypertrophied. (I'm slowly correcting this through the meticulous application of exercise, but the key word is SLOWLY!) The CP also makes it awkward to get around in long skirts, too, especially when navigating such "mundane-world" hazards as stairs and busses...

Edited on Fri Sep-05-03 01:57 PM by undisclosedlocation
1. Anything you read from me here was written while I was lying on the floor. I really, really, really don't like furniture.
2. I downloaded about 350 wav files of word pronunciations from Bartleby.com. Favorite, not counting the many many obscenities, is probably humuhumunukunukuapua'a
3. I used them to make incredibly twisted uh musical compositions. A couple of these didn't suck.

5. I used to be a property manager.
6. All I really want to do is write an epic poem. I keep getting stuck on the Catalogue of Ships...
7. I have three diplomas (HS, BA, MA) but never received any at a graduation ceremony. The college ones I just didn't attend but the high school fiasco was a result of throwing a pie at Mr. Infinger the previous day. (Note to younger DUers: if you're going to wear a cunning disguise like a bag over the head before pulling a school prank, don't say hi to your other teachers before doing so. They really aren't as dumb as they look.)
8. Yes, his name really was Infinger. Moreover, according to the class schedule, he taught Intro Anal (Algebra III/Introduction to Analysis (ie pre-Calculus)); it actually read Intro Anal E. Infinger. While this isn't really something about me, it's still funny all these years later.
9. I was a teacher's pet all the way through school, up until the day before graduation noted above of course.
10. I'm a baby boomer and a Generation Xer, and I'm so confused!

83. I wonder if anybody's still here. Oh well, here goes.
1. DU is the first and only message board I've ever posted on, and even now I don't feel I have the hang of it. I'm so obsessed by politics that I mostly hang out at Editorials, LBN and GD. I never even discovered the lounge for months. But when I do come here, I usually just lurk. I don't know how to be natural, though I'm not at all shy with people I can see. I love DU, but I can honestly say that I have not managed to make a single friend here--and I know the problem is with me. I tend to write the sort of serious (humorless?) posts that don't often get replies. This bothers me a little, but not as criticism of DU. I have less confidence in myself here than I do in my daily life (which is better than the other way around I guess).

OK, I got a little carried away in #1--too long and maudlin. To continue:
2. I like to look at stars, and remember being able to during summers at my grandparents' farm, and while I was in college, but I've lived in HUGE cities most of my life, where the lights erase most of them.

3. I've read "Pride and Prejudice" more than 10 times.

4. I try to avoid highways where I have to merge from the left into the fast lane. I can do it, but I hate it.

5. I know how to be organized, but it's been a long time since I've managed to actually be organized. I need to simplify my life.

6. I love roasted garlic cloves dipped in chunky dark miso. Also roasted raspberry chipotle sauce.

7. I have cross-country skiis that I haven't used in 4 years, but I don't want to get rid of them. Every year I promise myself I'll go out--maybe I'm fooling myself.

8. I was in the Peace Corps, in S Korea.

9. My father immigrated to the US from Sweden. He mock-hated that my school friends thought his accent was cute. I hadn't even realized that he had one until they mentioned it. My mother was born in the US, but she didn't learn English until she went to school--they spoke Norwegian at home. To my shame, I speak neither. (Mom wanted to be sure my sister and I didn't feel shy at school--but I could have tried to learn later.)

10. I wish I could afford to live in NYC.

Wow--this is HARD. But as others have said, quite instructive. I loved reading all the other posts, so I had to reciprocate, such as it is.

85. Hi, berry...
I know how you feel about only posting in one place. DU is the only place that I post and it was the first place I even tried it.. The advantage I had was that in July 2001, there were not nearly as many people posting here, and it was rather easy to "make friends"..

Actually, the lounge is a GREAT place to hang out and "meet" people on a more friendly level.. and it kind of inoculates you if you do get into a dust up in another forum.. It's hard to stay mad at someone when you know that they sucked their thumb til they were 14 or something equally personal..

And I probably have more "zero replies" than most here.. For a while we had a "views" column and that was actually helpful, because you could see that even though there were 5 or 6 replies, that post may have had hundreds of views.. I choose to think that the people clicked it, read it, and just did not have anything to add :)

I also read a lot of posts but by the time I think of something to add, it's moved on, and I cannot find it:):)

Everyone here is interesting, and even though I may not agree with lots of folks here, I have yet to meet up with a totally disagreeable person here..

Hang in there, and jump in.. :):)

87. Hi, SoCalDem!
What a nice reply! Hope I don't internalize the (I know unintended) message that whining brings results. :eyes: Sorry I forgot to check the thread til now--I want to thank you!!

I WILL jump in more. But in truth, I've been here for a pretty long time too. Not July 01, but when the total membership was about 8000 (I think)--I'm a very slow poster. It turns out it's a skill to chat and hang out on the web. I tend to be a hit-and-run poster. Someone congratulated the original poster of these threads for outstanding "tending" of them. Lightbulb moment! I'm slowly getting it....

I thought it was because I lived abroad for so long that I am DUMB about lots of pop culture stuff. And sort of behind the curve on computer literacy. But you're right--I do enjoy lounge threads. These 3, in particular, were funny, moving, sweet, etc., etc.--making everyone posting delightfully human.

84. Here's mine
Edited on Sat Sep-06-03 01:43 AM by TroubleMan
1. As a sophomore in high school I was a high school state chess champion, but basically got big into athletics after that and never really played seriously again.

2. At one club in DC, where I knew the owner, in one year all of the following happened: Salt of Salt N' Peppa flirted with me (seriously!! I didn't score though :(). I had deep conversations with Biz Markie about rap (he was also a friend of the owner and visited every now and then) and he knew me by name. And I had a long conversation with Guru from Gangstar.

3. When I was stationed in Okinawa in 1996 (Marine Corps), with the help of two very good books and lots of drunk nights at karaoke bars in Nago, I taught myself Japanese, and was able to hold a conversation in it by the end of the year. I've never been back to Japan, and sadly have forgotten 90% of what I had learned.

4. I actually like the song "Jam On It" by Newcleus....A LOT
(okay that's just embarrasing)

5. My screen name is from the Marvin Gaye song "Trouble Man," which is my favorite song of all time. That song parallels much of my life.

6. I was in a jail block with a former NFL player (most of his career was with the Chargers) and a boxer who at the time was considered one of the best pound for pound boxers in the world ....AT THE SAME TIME!! (no it wasn't Tyson)

7. I'm a huge rap fan, but I absolutely hate 90% of the rap that's out there today.....they've lost their soul, passion, and message. It's all about "bling bling" now, which is all superficial and panders to the radio audience, and the corporate greed of record companies and radio conglomerates. Rap used to be mostly political in nature, and underneath the bravado, usually (not always) had a deep message. As far as I know, only Mos Def and Talib Kweli follow that tradition nowadays.

8. If Bush gets elected again, there's a good chance I'll be moving to Canada or Amsterdam.

9. I know the words to almost every Al Green song.

10. If you could see me, you would think I'm just your average white guy, to whom none of those things could ever happen. I don't stand out at all upon first glance.

(on edit) I should add that I once had sex in public on a spinning stage in Naha. If you've ever been a Marine in Okinawa...you know the place I'm talking about. (I hope my Mom doesn't read this; she posts on DU, too.)

88. I suppose that I'll participate
I've already told or hinted at so many of my stories on DU but I'll try to think of a few that I never mentioned yet.
1. I've swam almost my whole life. My parents enrolled me in swim lessons at six months.
2. I won the National Geography Bee for my school in the fifth grade but moved later that year to a school that did not sponsor it.
3. I participated in 4-H for six years. I took sewing, cooking, and natural resources projects.
4. I attended all my mother's graduation ceremonies although I do not remember her high school graduation.
5. I once lived in a house that was part of the underground railroad.
6. I walk relatively fast because my parents took me on long walks as a child and made me keep up.
7. I was attacked by a German shepherd when I was three and didn't lose my fear of dogs until my mother's boy friend bought us a dog when I was seven.
8. I reached my full height when I was 11.
9. I learned to play chess before kindergarten.
10. I did not drink any pop for over five years because I believed that it would be detrimental to my running.
I know these things are not that interesting, but I have already revealed a lot in bits and pieces in past posts at least once (not that anyone probably remembers much).

7. My French accent is much better than my French vocabulary/grammar.

9. I attended Yale. Just a couple of seminars, but fun and very interesting.
10. I am a helluva cook.

1. I was a participant in the 100th Rose Parade.

2. I've never seen "The Sound Of Music" or "Lawrence of Arabia" (I've always wanted to see "Lawrence," too).

3. My sibling and I are both named after movie characters from eponymous movies (I think).

4. I've never watched any iteration of "Survivor" and refuse to participate in other symptoms (i.e., watching 'reality' shows) of this mindless desertification of what was already largely a cultural wasteland - US network TV.

5. I dive (SCUBA) solo.

6. I've been lost, on foot, in the desert. Well, temporarily misplaced - I found my way back (obviously).

7. I've never waterskied.

8. I've never been to Spain. But I kinda like the music.

9. I appeared in a gangsta rap video.

10. I've been at ground zero for three hurricanes. :o

96. Well,
I'm very new here, so nobody knows anything about me, but a few (ok, 10) things about me:

10. I'm a HUGE football (soccer) fan! I even cried when Galatasaray (a Turkish football team) won the UEFA Cup and when Turkish National Team lost against Brazil at World Cup semifinals. (I won't ever admit to that in public) Oh and I think England has no chance against us next month! :)

9. I wanted to be librarian when I was a child. I ended up being computer engineer instead.

8. I "converted" two ex-boyfriends from homophobia to bisexuality.

7. I have been diagnosed with avoidant personality disorder, I'm very shy against new people but don't show it, so they end up thinking I'm too cold.

6. I get seriously depressed at the thought that I won't live forever. I want to witness everything that ever happens in this world.

5. I hate working. I despise any Oracle product.

4. I'm left-handed. My right hand is almost completely useless on its own.

3. I want to believe in ghosts and magic, but can't. I mean, they are too cool to be only stories, aren't they?

2. I read Das Kapital when I was 12. I don't remember a single thing. (My bigger sister was actively involved with a communist organization at the time)

1. Even though I firmly believe that there is no Allah or any God, I fast for a few days at Ramadan, just because I love the atmosphere of a big family dinner after being hungry for a whole day. And I cheat on it, I don't eat or drink anything from sunrise to sunset but I smoke. Don't tell my mom.
