Earthquake!
Edited on Thu Sep-04-03 08:45 PM by Terwilliger
JEESE! Talk about a rush!

Once I realized things were moving, THEN I got worried...it was kind of a slow shaker after the initial jolt.

Almost better than tornadoes!

3.9!

then I felt this weird vibration...then all the sudden my stomach does flips and the house shook...then, like wobbly jello, everything seemed to slow down and finally stop

12. one here a couple of weeks ago - 5.1 not even reported!
:hi:

This is earthquake country in case you haven't figured it. A 3.9 is nothing!

I was living in San Francisco when the Loma Prieta hit (woahhhh a 7.1). After I left and moved where I am up north on the same fault - they had two in the middle of the night - a 7.0 and a 7.1 a couple of hours later! This was in 1992 I believe!

We never get the coverage up this way being there are only 100,000 people living in Humboldt county - a county the size of an entire state nonetheless!

Whole lotta shakin' going on!

Glad you are ok! That Berkeley/Hayward fault is the hidden threat in the Bay Area for quake that scientists care not to ponder the possible results of IMO! :nuke:

37. Where were you on October 17, 1989? (7.1)
I was living in the Marina District. I remember that night like it was yesterday. No way was I going to sleep until the fire was put out. I was ten blocks away and my eyes wouldn't stop tearing because of the smoke.

Yeah, it took at least 4.5 for me to feel it. (you get used to them.)

I must admit, though, I'm glad I'm living up north now. But when a large truck goes by...

42. 25 feet up an oak tree!
Wildest ride of my life. Between the tree trying to throw me and the power lines arcing 10 feet from me as they slapped each other, that was a minute I will never forget.

11. I'm in Berkeley too, & this one scared me! It lasted longer than usual,
& when it didn't go away after the first half-second or so, I began to get nervous. A minute later, I ran outside my building, & everyone else was outside. Everybody felt pretty much the same -- lots of nervous grinning going on.

Whew!

I don't see any damage, but I hear sirens outside on the main streets.

16. yep the Hayward fault - no joke!
It has gone off in a long long time. Last time I remember hearing about one was in the late 1950s. My father told me about it and said that it looked like the entire street was one big ocean wave!

If the Hayward fault blows bigtime, there will be more destruction than anyone ever imagined!

27. Hey John,
Had to mention...my partner watched the debate and said DK spoke very well. This was especially amazing as he really doesn't like DK (grew up in Cleveland - didn't like him growing up I guess).

Sorry to hijack the thread... :)

Thanks leftcoast, thats interesting you say that because some people here are a little how should I say aggreavated. I missed it because I was busy here and doing stuff for school but good to know leftcoast. Ive never been to Cleveland, Ive said jokingly that one of the only things me and DK would disagree on is sports teams, I am a baltimore orioles fan and hes an indians fan and for football I love the steelers I bet he likes the browns. BTW intersting note he played both sports. Dont have to be sorry leftcoast youre a good enough guy.

Five or Six 5+ quakes in twelve hours. Felt like getting off a merry-go-round.

Have fun with the aftershocks!

to get my survival pack together. I'm not sure I could find a working flashlight if my life depended on it. All my water is in the hot water heater and I'm almost out of matches. Sigh.
Everytime we get one of these jolts I remeind myself how copletely unprepared I really am.

24. which SF quake? the 1906?
My family is an old SF family and I have relics of that quake in my house that were rescued from where they were living on Folsom street in 1906. That was a hell of a quake alright and made for constant converstation whenever 'the family' got together. I've figured it out and between all of the SF quakes (there was a big one in 1866 and another one even bigger in 1868) that made the '06 look like nothing!

I believe my family lost 6 homes from those quakes - no wonder they were so freaky about it!

25. er...
could that not be merely a foreshock before the real plateshift?

I couldn't live where it earthquakes. Just like I wouldn't live in Seattle. I don't wish to live a happy little life, only to be boiled alive in a 200-foot-wall of molten concrete.

http://volcanoes.usgs.gov/Hazards/What/PF/pcflows.html

Seattle DUers, how is it that you keep from recoiling in horror every time you look upon Mt. Ranier?

Said he thought there was something wrong with the building and finally figured out it was an earthquake. Didn't knock anything around, then again he doesn't have much to knock around.

any aftershocks to report?
Stay on your toes, T , sometimes the aftershocks are stronger than the first one!

I usually move all my breakables into the towel drawers until the shaking stops.

Nada here to report and I like it that way
Peace
