1. But I Did Like White Rabbit...
... and poor Grace Slick admited once that she was so out of it and under the influence that she has no independent recollection of ever having recorded the song.

2. "Mickey" is Mickey Thomas.
Edited on Fri Sep-05-03 09:48 AM by playahata1
With the exception of "Jane," his Starship stuff sucks big-time. Overall, moreover, he was so much better on Elvin Bishop's "Fooled Around and Fell in Love" -- which I have been singing constantly the last couple of weeks.

Edited on Fri Sep-05-03 09:52 AM by wyldwolf
damn, Mickey Thomas can SIIIING!!!

I also like "No Way Out," "Find Your Way Back," and "Laying It On The Line."

Before joining the Starship he was being recruited by several other arena bands.

They were just a watered down version of The Airplane.

8. More than watered down....
One of the truly greatest rock bands ever went on to be one of the most lame bands ever. Quite an accomplishment actually. I guess "Miracles" is a pretty good song...."Built this City" is so bad that I'm embarrased for them when I hear it. Maybe the worst rock song ever.

Jorma!

6. Miracles....Naughty lyrics in the full version
Edited on Fri Sep-05-03 09:59 AM by kmla
... I had a taste of the real world
(just a drop of of it)
When I went down on you....

A naughty lyric that slipped by the censors.

Thanks, Casey! And now, a long distance dedication...

30. It didn't 'slip by the censors'...
...since it was taken out of the version heard on the radio, along with the line about "when I start dancing inside you"...

12. Gotta agree Awf
They were just a shadow of their former selves by the Starship. I saw them in 80 or 81 and I will say they did rock on Wooden Ships. Wish I could've seen 'em in the day...

15. another mickey song....."find your way back"
It's been a long, long road
Since I packed up and left on my own
And I carry a heavy load
Just trying to get back to her heart

I sure ain't got no home
I seem to find love where I ramble
And when it's time to go
I hear that voice again, saying........

find your way back...
find your way back, to her heart...

leave a message with the rain
You can find me where the wind blows
The snow across the pain
And the frost upon the heart

You got no place to be
Still you wonder where you're going
And why I had to leave
I hear a voice......It says to me

I know it's too late now
But, I wish I could go back in time
And start all over somehow
And get it right from the start

16. "Runaway"
I think that song is really beautiful. Although I like Jefferson Airplane substantially more, I think Jefferson Starship did plenty of good music as well. I just approach them as two totally different bands; I think it's easier to acknowledge the good stuff by both that way (especially in the case of Jefferson Starship). "Red Octopus" is my favorite album by Jefferson Starship, although there's several I haven't heard.

18. Hyperdrive
I like most all of what is on the Dragonfly album. Of course that was when they had Popa John on the violin.

Ya gotta love these lyrics -Be Young You

The tongues of some men are made of metal
The tongues of some men are made of oil
But the keepers of those men never rolled
Their tongues for anybody's free ride but there own
Now the oily tongues are thirsty for Black gold..

22. Way better as "Airplane". "Starship" is too commercialized, sanitized
Even Paul Kantner disses "Starship" (he gives the group the finger in the VH1 'behind the music' episodes devoted to Jefferson Airplane, and he's the lead singer!)

Dunno about Grace Slick, she's changed a lot since the counterculture attempt at revolution... :-(

..he had a fued with Mickey Thomas.
