Hey Oakland, CA! Any jobs out there?
My son's out of work. He's sent out lots of apps. but has only gone on a few interviews Are the gov. career centers any good? Any advice from a native that I can give him? BTW..he has a degree in Fine Arts (I know, I know......I WARNED HIM!!!) He earned money in school as a grill cook; he's worked for CALPIRG and the Human Rights Campaign canvassing since he's been out there (about 11 months) and he's interested in getting into social work...wants to go back to school to get psych degree. Oh....he has no teaching credits.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

1. What's wrong with Fine Arts?

It could be worse, he could have gotten a degree in Computer Science.

I mean, after all, how many people get jobs that have anything to do with their degree? I've been in I.T. for almost 20 years, and the bottom has fallen out and it's only getting worse, so, I'm going back to school and studying art history, gemmology, antique furniture, and appraisal studies. Hopefully, by the time I lose my current and last I.T. position, I can get into estate sales or become an appraiser.

I work at Kaiser in Oakland and there are admin jobs that open up from time to time that require little or no experience. Have him try http://www.kaiserpermanentejobs.org/

On edit: If he thinks he'll like social work, has he considered becoming a psychatric nurse? Two more years of school is all it would take, and there are all kinds of incentives because of the nursing shortage.

2. Hokey smoke, Monkeyboy
I work at Kaiser Oakland. PM me, and I'll do the same so we can hook up. Are you going to the farmer's market today? :bounce:

I was going to suggest the same thing about applying at Kaiser. It's a huge employer and a decent place to work.
