What's your favorite Van Morrison song?
About a year ago, a local dj said that everyone loves Van Morrison. While I don't know if that's true, I do love him. I have a bunch of his CDs and am trying to make a compilation for myself but know I will have a hard time narrowing it down.

1. I like:
Moondance. Brown-eyed girl is in second, as an "homage" to my lovely wife.

13. Won A Battle Of The Bands Doing That Song
It was a "Picks & Sticks" contest. Just guitar picks and drumsticks. Everyone had to play the instruments through the amps that were there. No pedals, no toys. Couldn't even touch the knobs on the amps. (Except to adjust the volume a little, with permission.)

They had a list of 100 songs, and you had to pick 3 of those songs of the list, submit what you were going to do one week in advance, and then just do those. In 20 minutes from the time the last band finished to get up, get ready, do 3 tunes, and get off the stage and let the next band start. Really efficiently run contest.

One of the three songs we did was Brown Eyed Girl. The biggest surprise was that there was a young woman sitting 20 feet from the front of the stage that was mouthing every single word as i sang the song. She was no more than 17 years old. But, she knew every word to that song. Her parents must be cool!

34. Love this one too. Always knew it was a cover, but had no idea how old
Just googled; written by Scott Wiseman in '45. Recorded by Gene Autry, Elvis Presley, Ricky Nelson, Porter Waggoner & Skeeter Davis, Joe Cocker, Van, and Rod Stewart. Even Rod couldn't fuck it up that badly.

for a short, bad-tempered, mean, drunken little Irishman, he surely has written some beautiful songs.

(oh, and I'm a short, bad-tempered, mean, drunken little Irishwoman myself, but have never written any beautiful songs, or in fact any songs at all)

Listen to the Lion, oh, there's just too many to choose from. Probably, honestly, "Autumn Song" would be my very favorite though. I was just listening to it (over and over) as it's starting to feel a little fall like here :-) I LOVE fall!!!

25. No Guru, No Method, No Teacher: a truely great album
This little known Van Morrison, at the height of his mystical revival, doesn't have any pop hits but the whole album is wonderful. Which can not be said of much of his later work.

30. Van Morrison is one of the best ever....
For me to try and pick a best Van Morrision song is impossible. I honestly think he is one of the best singer/songwriters that I am familiar with. I starting listening to VM in college and still listen to his music today....it's timeless.

Almost any song from his first five or six albums is worthy of mention. Like a lot of musicians he ventured into some different areas....some of which I didn't care for as much. However, a few songs that aren't on the first six albums that I really like are......Enlightenment, Real Real Gone, and Rave on John Donne. Rave on John Donne is a live recording and it took me a while to really get into it, but over the last 5 years, I probably have listened to it 2 or 3 times a week....it really cooks!!!!!!!

A side note, I was involved in assiting with concerts back in the seventies and had the opportunity to eat lunch with VM.

38. I hope he got permission
Van's a prickly guy, he doesn't seem to be flattered by people paying tribute to him. I read an interview where he raged against all the artists that "ripped him off." He's even written songs about it. It's really kind of strange.

Bob Seger's trailing off at the end of "Against the wind" is a tribute to Van. Seger was one of the guys that he flamed. :-)
