Poll question: Favorite song by the Velvet Underground!
Hard to pick just 9 songs! I had to leave out some great ones. It's up to you to write 'em in.

:)

... so I was around in the 60's...

I'm inclined to believe I'm SQUARE instead of too old. But being considered too YOUNG is a nice thought too. :-)

22. I used to Listen to Lou Reed Live in Italy
a lot. I lived in my tiny little basement apt. One day I woke up around noon, put on some Lou, realized it was the 6th of the month so I struggled upstairs to the business above that collected my rent, owned the apartment. As I handed the check to Joe, who was kind pissed it was late, the following came drifting up through the floor boards, just as plain as if it were coming from the radio in the room:
When I put a spike into my vein
And I tell you things aren't quite the same
When I'm rushing on my run
And I feel just like Jesus' son...

What could I say? "Lou Reed, Live in Italy."

20. Sister Ray!!!
The BEST getting drunk song ever...play this LOUD!!! Fourteen minutes of sheer brilliance...

Used to have this drunk neighbor who used to play country music LOUD...one day I left for work, put the speakers out my window, and put side 2 of "White Light, White Heat" on at a VERY LOUD VOLUME...it was the olden days, and my record player at the time could play the same side over and over, so eight hours later, I came home and it was still on...I finally shut it off...

You know, the guy next door never did play his country music very loud anymore :)

35. The Joy Division remake isn't that great....
although everything they ever did is great. In a way their most interesting "cover" of a VU song is "atmosphere". Listen to Heroin, then listen to the fist version of atmosphere (called "change" on some bootlegs, but was officially published on Heart and Soul) and then listen to the original published version of "Atmosphere". It's esp. about the use of the synth or earlier the melocica by Joy Division and the strings used to make Heroin, what it is.

And all the politicians makin' crazy sounds
And everybody puttin' everybody else down
And all the dead bodies piled up in mounds
Ciao,
Dirk

Has one of those new CD jukeboxes...one of the selections is "Best of the Velvet Underground" and the only song is "Heroin"...Played it one time, and this lady was screaming that it was the worst thing she'd ever heard...I then proceeded to play it two more times :)

37. Stephanie Says.... okay, Sweet Jane, Sweet Jane!
I really like the quirkiness of "She's not afraid to die, the people all call her Alaska" in Stephanie Says...

But Sweet Jane just rocks up and down the block.

Some people, they like to go out dancin', other people they have to work......

38. "Jenny said when she was just five years old..."
"....You know there ain't nothing happening at all
Every time she puts on the radio
There was nothing goin' down at all
Then one fine mornin' she puts on a New York station
She couldn't believe what she heard at all
She started dancin' to that fine fine music
You know her life was saved by Rock 'n' Roll"

Testify, brother Lou!

"Oh! Sweet Nothin'" is a close second...

41. Waiting for the Man
Edited on Mon Sep-08-03 09:25 AM by FlashHarry
I'm waiting for my man
Twenty-six dollars in my hand
Up to Lexington, 125
Feel sick and dirty, more dead than alive
I'm waiting for my man
Hey, white boy, what you doin' uptown?
Hey, white boy, you chasin' our women around?
Oh pardon me sir, it's the furthest from my mind
I'm just lookin' for a dear, dear friend of mine
I'm waiting for my man
Here he comes, he's all dressed in black
Beat up shoes and a big straw hat
He's never early, he's always late
First thing you learn is you always gotta wait I'm waiting for my man
Up to a Brownstone, up three flights of stairs
Everybody's pinned you, but nobody cares
He's got the works, gives you sweet taste
Ah then you gotta split because you got no time to waste
I'm waiting for my man
Baby don't you holler, darlin' don't you bawl and shout
I'm feeling good, you know I'm gonna work it on out
I'm feeling good, I'm feeling oh so fine
Until tomorrow, but that's just some other time
I'm waiting for my man
