Early in the commercialization phase of the Internet, everyone wanted a DOT-COM domain simply because 90 percent of the domains were .com, so people automatically put this in to whatever clever name one came up with. Wouldn't matter it you were really a commercial operation or not, you had to register blahblahblah.com as well as .org and, usually, .net.
