we had pepfests! And they were compulsory! :-(

Sixth period every Friday there was a mandatory pep fest for whichever sport was in season.

My boyfriend and I refused to stand up for the cheers, because we agreed that the whole scene reminded us of the Nuremburg Rallies. (One reason that we got along was that we were among the few students in our school who were seriously into history.)

We thought that Hitler could have gone a long way in the U.S. if only he had thought of having cheerleaders at his rallies. :-)

Anyway, the schedule caused the sixth period sections to get way behind other sections taking the same subject, so the teachers complained.

The solution? The Friday schedule was modified, so that sixth period became first period one week, with first period as second period, and so on. The week after that, fifth period became first period, sixth period became second period, and so on and so on and dooby-dooby-doo.

But give up pep fests or make them optional? Whaaaat? That would be sacrilege to the true American religion, Sports.

P.S. I was at Mound-Westonka, then known simply as "Mound."

16. I went through the Chicago public school system.
They were happy if we didn't overdose in the halls. Sometimes we did. I never attended a sporting event or pep rally the whole four years, although we had them. Only geeks and losers did that. Freaks rule!

2. I sneaked out of all my pep-fests in HS.
I had a legitimate excuse, too. I had to walk a mile or so to work and I had to be there by 3:00 pm, and the pep-fest usually started at 2:25 or so. I told that to the security guy at the door and said to call my boss for proof, and he always said OK, so they let me out.

And yes, pep-fests bite the big one. Especially when your high school sucked at most sports (like mine), and there was a shit-load of blind faith in that gymnasium that you really didn't want to see. It wouldn't suck so bad if your teams were really good, I guess.

Edited on Fri Sep-05-03 04:15 PM by northwest
I'm assuming you're in MN, cause I think I remember something about that in a Twin Cities DU'ers conversation...

I went to St. Louis Park, BTW. Class of 2001.

3. My friends and I once protested a pep rally
We dressed in all black (instead of our "class colors" -- Seniors gold, Juniors green, and Freshmen and Sophomores in the colors of the Homecoming rival) and painted "Class Unity" across our faces and chanted "Un-i-ty!" and booed when the MC (a teacher!) called the Homecoming Court "the beautiful people."

The principal came up to us after the rally, I took responsibility (I had a blemish-free disciplinary record) and told him he could send me the page of the student handbook that bans anti-pep and I'd be happy to publically apologize and serve the consequences.

He told me to "get the hell out of my gym."

17. No shit!!
And we HAD to applaud the motherfuckers!!!!! I remember yet, 37 years later, how some of those asshole bullies would strut around while the girls simpered and squeeled at them. Made me nauseous. I secretly hoped they would LOSE every fucking game!!!!!

Wow, that was in the mid 60s, and I am obviously still totally pissed about it....

You can always sit in the corner and mock people. Personally, I'd ask if I could sit it out and study in the library or something. How can they say no to studying?

21. ugh. I forgot about all that crap!
Yuck. I can still see those jocks (some of them my friends, but still. . .) in those hideous shoulderpad-less jerseys walking around school.

My friends and I used to subsititute various colleges or tennis player's names into cheers like, "Who ya rootin' for . . . "

Hey breezygirl, I started high school in England, then moved to the states. I still remember seeing my first "pepfest". My jaw dropped open, it was so asinine and juvenile. And the girls tried to recruit me as a CHEERLEADER. OMG, I laughed so hard. No way in HELL would I degrade myself like that. I asked them, WHY AREN'T YOU PLAYING YOUR OWN SPORTS? WHY ARE YOU TITILLATING GUYS INSTEAD? That was back in 71. I guess I was way, way before my time. :D

on edit - to all you people who want to defend the "sport" of cheerleading, f***ing SAVE IT. IT'S CRAP.

25. I hated the damn pep rallies
So, after a couple of mindless rah-rah fests (including one in which I was forced to perform), I skipped every damn one of them and did experiments in the physics lab. One time, a teacher caught me coming out of the physics lab before the damn pep rally was over (it had been a special extended homecoming rally) and she wanted the office to give me an unexcused absence for the day! But the principal was cool-- when he heard that I had been studying during the rally, he said "I used to do the same thing" and let me off the hook.
