I actually think "1999" and "Purple Rain" are close musically, but then that second album had the awful movie to go with it, so it loses points just for that. The title track ("1999") and "Little Red Corvette" are indisputable classics on his 1983 album, and I'm not sure any of the "Purple Rain" tunes get there.
