I subscribed to salon for one month.
Because it was forbidden fruit - I guess - I thought I might be missing some good stuff.

So far, I keep checking their site but I seldom find anything that I didn't find on DU several hours (or days) earlier - and usually more thoroughly discussed and analyzed here.

I like to support all alternative voices (even if they are not totally alternative). But now I'm into the third week of my scrip and see little reason to re-up.

Are there salon subscribers here who find it more useful than me? Am I looking at the wrong links and stories?

1. I would never cancel mine....
Although to be honest I'm not sure at this point which of the articles are scrip only and which are not so I can't say. But the fact is they have some great articles, some great blogs (Joe Conason), some amazing columnists and great articles on everything from politics to entertainment.

Even if most of the articles are free and I'm just not noticing it, if my subscription keeps them going then I'm all for it and have no problem "donating" if that's what it ends up being. If Salon goes under it's yet another forum for liberal articles and expression that will go down the crapper.

2. Annoying AOL Ad's - On Every
story. I wrote e-mails yesterday complaining. They are so annoying, it's hard to read an aritcle. I'm talking about the new flash ad, that never stops. Pictures of Bush I & II non stop. Once would be plenty on the flash. Salon can regulate their ad content too! If I were the editor, I would limit the flashing to once.

5. I don't get these popups
Is this just for guest accounts, or whatever they call them, or does this happen to subscribers also?

6. I think there are two levels
One gets ads - the other doesn't but costs more.

7. Pop-Ups
I am a "Salon" subscriber and do not get the pop-ups, thank g-d. I hate AOL so much I would probably become violent. BTW: if you don't want any pop-ups on any site, use the Opera browser and set your preference to permit only the pop-ups you request (like the ones which are used to e-mail URLs). Works perfectly.

8. Google toolbar -
you can block pop-ups with the Google toolbar as well. I have it and it works very well and has a lot of features that I find extremely useful like pagerank. Very occasionally one will get through, but for the most part I'm pop-up free!

9. Thank, I'll Try This
I am a paying subscriber - I still think Salon should limit the number of times a flash ad can flash. As a possible new subscriber who didn't know about Opera, (like me) I would reconsider paying.

3. since they dropped the fascist writers
I've decided that I like it as the best liberal magazine available. I get Mother Jones too, but she is sooo boring.

4. I love Salon
Sure, they've had their Horowitz's, but they're day-in, day-out, consistently progressive/liberal, and I think they have some of the best political commentary around.

I've subscribed for just over 2 years now.

10. I Love Salon
I subscribed for Joe Conason's blog, but also love the cultural writing, advice column (Since You Asked) and gossip. I generally like the political writers like Conason and Eric Boehlert best, and love reading the interesting comments on Table Talk, their chat board.
